little advice to pnms

by: Old Grasshopper

As competitive as some sororities are amongst each other, there really is a Greek unity that exists at this school. Most girls have multiple friends in various sororities, and they cross "tier" boundaries. Many girls have friends in sororities at other schools and still keep in touch regularly. My point is this: everyone talks. What you tell someone at another school or whoever will probably find its way back to an active's ear. Be polite to every single person you meet. This shouldn't start and stop with Rush. You are no better than anyone. You are no worse. Please be confident in yourself, but not conceited. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see a girl walk in smiling, return my hello with genuine excitement, and actively engage in a conversation, as brief as it is. There is a house that you will fit in with. You many not feel it until the end of your freshman year, that is fairly common. But be positive about each house and every girl you meet, because they could end up being your sisters and you would have already started off on a bad foot with your house. Things get around and can be taken out of context. Some sororities have reputations and have some not so awesome incidents on their resume, but I'm sure that goes for you PNMs as well. But there are around 400 girls in each house. THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU, I promise. Some girls get the house they wanted from the start, some don't. No matter the sorority, you're getting 300+ automatic friends. Be happy.

It's so good to hear this as I am someone who is nervous about having those 300+ automatic friends! Since that doesn't really occur in high school, its nice to know that people will like me for me! Not for my popularity, my make up, and the list goes on and on. So thank you!

It's ok to be nervous! Trust me even the "perfect" pnm is! And you should try to look your best during rush, don't get me wrong. Nails & makeup done etc... However, stay true to yourself! If you're not a Jack Rogers fan, don't buy them because you see them being worn. Just look on Pinterest for rush wardrobes & in the book yall get & add your own little twist. There's a certain amount of superficiality to the experience, but if you go in and are polite, positive, and truly give each house your best effort then you will end up where you should be 99% of the time. Some actives will have you crossed off a list for whatever reason & that's how it is, so don't stress what you can't change. I thought rush was fun, as exhausting as it was. I loved meeting new people. Don't think any less of yourself for the letters you wear. Amazing girls in each house with amazing qualities share the same sisterhood as you, know that and take pride in it! Make other girls glad they ended up in your house by how you react on bid day. Happiness is contagious. The experience really is what you make it!
