family name

I see some posts on here that talk about connections and family being relevant to recruitment. So if a pnm has a dad who is president of some company in Alabama, how do the houses know this? Is that something that comes through in the recs?

Yes- most likely your rec writer would mention it!

Your parents schools and occupations are on the social resume you sent in to rec writers. Yes they may make note of that. However, PNMs from wealthy or well-known families in their community either have family who are alums who donate to the sorority and that gets them known, or they have connections to the community where alums reside. For example, in almost every high school PTA in my area there will be alums from almost every sorority. Moms gossip, that gossip goes to alums, and alums tell the actives.

Do the actives really listen to the alums in making their lists?

I mean, alums help do research where actives cannot. There are thousands of PNMs and we try to know as much about them as we can. However if there is someone no one in the house has personal connections to, we might have alums in her hometown call around or see if there is anyone she knows at the PNM's high school or sports teams and inquire about her or her family. Alums want the best for their chapter just as the active collegians do, so yes we listen when some are like "hey, this PNM has a good reputation and her family donates frequently to XYZ charity" and we'll keep an eye out for her. Doesn't mean she has an automatic bid, but alums definitely help us identify girls to put on our radar.

If a pnm has family stuff like that it usually gets known and it is helpful at houses where the actives "get it" in terms of thinking ahead for the house. Old row houses get it usually.
