So I've seen a lot of things about a Gamma Phi being really a bottom tier house along with SDT.. As a PNM I don't really care about the whole tiers thing but I was just wondering are they consider bottom because they don't have as strong a sisterhood as other houses or something like that or is this ranking based on social status and them not putting a huge emphasis on looks and stuff.. I met one girl who was really sweet so I'm just wondering about this

they are bottom. They dont have a stronger social status or stronger sisterhood than the other houses currently.

Actually they have a great sisterhood - it's probably the best reason to pledge gamma phi. They're not ranked high because they don't affiliate with old row and typically don't pledge a hot pledge class.

Short answer: The greek community loves to have an underdog to beat on and make fun of, and unfortunately Gamma Phi filled the spot.

Long answer: Many years ago, before it became socially acceptable in the south to do so, Gamma Phi offered a bid to an African American PNM. They are the first NPC sorority at UA to have done this, and as a result they were shunned by the rest of the Greek community who believed that the chapters should remain segregated. GPhi was already considered to be "new row" at the time, so it didn't take much for them to become known as the bottom house on campus. Thankfully times have changed and I don't think there is a single NPC sorority that doesn't have black members (or other minority members as well, for that matter), and aside from some archaic views of some alumnae groups, race really isn't a factor when a pledge is being considered for membership to any of the sororities. However, because GPhi was considered to be a bottom house for so long, that reputation still hangs around because what a house was like thirty, forty years ago still matters to people here. Nowadays they, along with other "bottom tier" houses, have the advantage of taking smart and beautiful oos girls who were cut by "top tier" houses for lacking the right connections and zip codes, which gives them very strong and diverse sisterhoods. GPhi girls are some of the sweetest I've met on campus, and I really don't think they deserve the hand they've been dealt here.

Thanks for the honest and detailed response. I just couldn't really get a feel for them on preview day and so I just wanted to get a little more on them. Sounds like a great house. Of course I was impressed with so many other houses but I just didn't really know much about them., thanks

Is that they're "new" (1989) compared with houses that have been on campus 90-100+ years.

Actually it was arranged with Gamma Phi for them to take an AA girl so the media would back off Alabama. In exchange, they got swaps with top fraternities for a year.
That was in 2002.
And every sorority would prefer to take a majority of Alabama girls because they're the ones who will marry Alabama boys and stay in Alabama and be available to support the chapter in 30, 40 years.
We love the OOS girls, but they tend to go back to OOS and never return to Alabama, serve as a chapter adviser or send money for the house!

Don't oversell the 'beautiful' side of the new girls. I'm no troll, but you're crazy to think Gamma Phi picks up very attractive OOS girls. Those girls, assuming they have good grades, get picked up by ADPi, Pi Phi, and the list goes down until DZ or DG before Gamma Phi is even mentioned. I'm sorry to all the Gamma Phi's I offend with that statement but it is true, and you can ask any guy from a fraternity on University (other than Phi Psi of course) and they'll tell you the same thing.

So out of over 300 girls in GPhi, not a single one is beautiful? I highly doubt that, and it's pretty ridiculous that you would even suggest it. No need to be so catty.

I saw lots of pretty girls GDD. When you say they don't have any pretty girls it makes me distrust all the other stuff you said. Also, I find it hard to believe that anyone, even girls from Alabama, have a solid ranking of houses and everyone keeps the same houses and releases the same ones based on this order. That's stupid.

I just wanted to add that Gphi and SDT are not the same situation at all. SDT struggled hard about ten or 15 years ago, and lost their house and currently have about 60 members. They're doing a really good job of getting back on their feet (at one point they had about 15 members), but they're not comparable. Gphi has the same number of members as the other houses, that huge new house, and is generally considered to be on the same level as theta and maybe the other lower houses, depending on who you ask.

Ok I get it so that's why SDT has that informal rush that I heard someone talking about..

Yeah, SDT does informal, although we're all hoping they'll be back on the row eventually and participate in recruitment!

SDT did not "lose their house!"
They kept their house for many years after they quit living in it because the numbers dwindled down to more like 12 or 15. But they leased it out as various fraternities and sororities remodeled or rebuilt. They finally sold it to Alpha Phi.

^You're being very picky about something that really doesn't matter... The commenter said nothing rude about SDT and was actually very nice. Just to play devil's advocate, you will find many people who consider struggling so badly that you can't afford to keep the building and "losing the house" to be one in the same.
