gphi
by: So...So I've seen a lot of things about a Gamma Phi being really a bottom tier house along with SDT.. As a PNM I don't really care about the whole tiers thing but I was just wondering are they consider bottom because they don't have as strong a sisterhood as other houses or something like that or is this ranking based on social status and them not putting a huge emphasis on looks and stuff.. I met one girl who was really sweet so I'm just wondering about this

Short answer: The greek community loves to have an underdog to beat on and make fun of, and unfortunately Gamma Phi filled the spot.
Long answer: Many years ago, before it became socially acceptable in the south to do so, Gamma Phi offered a bid to an African American PNM. They are the first NPC sorority at UA to have done this, and as a result they were shunned by the rest of the Greek community who believed that the chapters should remain segregated. GPhi was already considered to be "new row" at the time, so it didn't take much for them to become known as the bottom house on campus. Thankfully times have changed and I don't think there is a single NPC sorority that doesn't have black members (or other minority members as well, for that matter), and aside from some archaic views of some alumnae groups, race really isn't a factor when a pledge is being considered for membership to any of the sororities. However, because GPhi was considered to be a bottom house for so long, that reputation still hangs around because what a house was like thirty, forty years ago still matters to people here. Nowadays they, along with other "bottom tier" houses, have the advantage of taking smart and beautiful oos girls who were cut by "top tier" houses for lacking the right connections and zip codes, which gives them very strong and diverse sisterhoods. GPhi girls are some of the sweetest I've met on campus, and I really don't think they deserve the hand they've been dealt here.

I just wanted to add that Gphi and SDT are not the same situation at all. SDT struggled hard about ten or 15 years ago, and lost their house and currently have about 60 members. They're doing a really good job of getting back on their feet (at one point they had about 15 members), but they're not comparable. Gphi has the same number of members as the other houses, that huge new house, and is generally considered to be on the same level as theta and maybe the other lower houses, depending on who you ask.
