gap year

by: Brit :)

Hey guys! So I am thinking of taking a gap year to travel a bit. I would go to bama starting the fall of 2016 as an incoming first year student. Would this be weird or hurt my chances during rush?? I would still be paying 4 years worth of dues, but I would be a year older than most of the other girls (although I will be technically a member of the freshman class.)

I am kind of worried about this! What do yall think?

To me a freshman is a freshman is a freshman. You'll be older than your pledge class but lots of people start school early or late so there's always an age range in pledge classes. Plus you'll have something really cool to talk about during rush. You should be fine.

will only be 1 year older than them, so I don't think that you'll have anything to worry about. There are going to be girls that have always been in that grade who are your age because they got held back in kindergarten or just started kindergarten late or something else like that. And there will also be girls who are 2 years younger than you and 1 year younger than most people in that grade because they started elementary school early or something like that.

I also took a gap year after high school. I was very involved and had nice grades, so I still had fair (if not the maximum) amount of houses each day. The only "annoying" part of my experience is that I was considered an upperclassman- because they define this by graduation date. So all throughout recruitment, I had to reexplain to girls that I was not a transfer/sophomore, but a freshman who took some time off to go abroad. I fit in so well with my pledge class, regardless of age, because I am experiencing the same things as them at the same time. I relate more strongly to my pledge class than to the one above me that were really my graduating class. If you do take a year off, I would highly recommend still rushing! Your odds of getting a bid are hardly slimmed down from the experience.

It would be a little weird. That's not the norm for most UA students.
But if you don't mind being around snot-nosed 18-year-olds, go for it.
