I'm going to Alabama next year and will be a freshman from out of state.. My GPA is fine (3.7) but I have a low ACT (20).. how much does this hurt my recruitment?

We only care about GPA

I was told by someone that ACT was significant for some sororities, i.e. AXO.. Your GPA could be good, but they also looked heavily at ACT.

a lot of people have low SAT / ACT scores. this is usually the case from small private christian schools. very high GPA's because the classwork is held to low standards.

As an active in an old row house who went into recruitment with a high GPA and low ACT score, I can honestly say that I do not feel my ACT score had any bearing on my recruitment. As a rising junior, I can also say it has had no bearing on my academic performance at Bama, as I have been on the Dean's List each semester here.

And what exactly is wrong with being a dance major? I still made the Dean's List each semester here. Of all the people I've met here at UA the people in dance are definitely some of the smartest in the whole school!

Hahah alright. Dance doesnt even come close to Engineering, Math, CS, and PreMED. Thats where the smartest kids are. If you actually were smart you would realize that all your dance degree is gonna get you is a job at Starbucks. Good luck once you graduate

I'm not saying that dance is as hard as those majors but I am on the Dean's List and I got a low ACT score.. thats what OP asked about anyway..
You sound bitter..
Did you not make the Dean's List?

from my year was a dance major. She opened a dance studio right out of college and is making a fortune! My mom pays $1000 a semester for my younger sister and that doesn't even include her private lessons, summer camps ($400 a week), etc. My friend is easily making $500k plus. I wouldn't knock dance majors ... especially smart ones!

Goes to show...anyone can get into UA!

This is a large public university.......not Harvard. Most public universities take some people who probably shouldn't have been accepted.

not all public universities.. some are competitive see uc berkeley, ucla, uva, unc... but those are ranked much higher than ua

If it comes down to giving you a bid or another girl with equal grades and attributes, they might come down on the side of the higher GPA.
That there would only be a very slim chance of that happening.

UA has a program to admit students with acceptable GPAs but unusually low ACT scores. it's part of the school's public education mission.

Four years later, the weak students failed out long ago and the good students, regardless of ACT score, are graduating.

Chapters look for women with all types of talents to add to the mix. Especially people who can sing, dance, create art, etc. These talents are needed for a successful chapter.

By: Your major is needed

excellent point. there are a lot of girls who were leaders in student government, officers in various clubs, and that is all good. these girls show promise because they likely will also be involved and active in the same type of activities at UA. however, there are a lot of these girls. there are fewer that have acting/singing/art skills that can be brought to the table. if you are one of them and you are cute and fun to be with, you will be sought after by most houses.

oh, and there are a lot of dancers around, but not that many with big accomplishments. so if you are an awesome dancer and can prove it (like actives know you are good and have seen you perform) then that is a way to stand out too.

The majority of dance majors are double majoring so no need to hate on us. What a boring place we'd have without the arts?! Let's all respect each others choices please.

20 ACT?
Relax.
I just saw a panhellenic packet on a girl with a 17 ACT and pretty fair grades.
To the UA haters: UA has a special admission program for kids with low ACTs.

Some kids don't test well.
Some kids can overcome by working really hard on their grades.
As long as they can earn a diploma, so what?
