gpa

by:

I have a 2.9 gpa and I know this might really limit my choices for rush. I'm trying to be positive about it and make sure I have great recs and do everything I can to make my resume look good. However I know that there is an estimated increase in girls who will be rushing this year. Does this mean that each sorority will be allowed to take more girls or will a ton of girls get cut this year? Does this mean it is more likely then not that I'll have an unsuccessful recruitment?

A recent alum who was part of the recruitment team for my house last year, I wouldn't recommend rushing this year period. Yes, you will be dropped by nearly every house the first round with maybe one or two left on philanthropy. Grades are the easiest cut, and if there's a choice between you with a 2.9 and someone else with a 3.6, the 3.6 will be kept over you. Sorry for the harsh truth but you're better off pledging the library your first semester and wait for spring rush or rushing fall of your sophomore year.

Great Recs won't overcome a 2.9 GPA. When making decisions about 2,000 girls, nobody digs up the rec and says OH but her rec is sooooo good! Unless your BFF is the president or recruitment chair, you will be dropped quick. Alabama recruitment can be very impersonal, and hard and fast data is used the first round.

if you are from a competitive high school
if you have great rec's
if your family has money
if you have extra sports participation
if you are from MT Brook
if you have old row connections

it happens all the time, every year.

This is the exception. You have to have friend who is willing to bring you up above the cut line for a vote, and even then the other girls might still veto it. Especially during the first round and second round. Connections are about the only life preserver because otherwise you are just a number because many cuts are pre-determined for the first round.

My opinion: It's not a great GpA, and be aware that some groups will drop you right away.
BUT - you might just find your match. Waiting for next year will NOT guarantee you'll get a "better" sorority. One way or another, you'll need to be open to any sorority, not just the so-called "lower tier" groups (which are still among the leading chapters in their sororities nationwide).
More rushees - not a problem. Quota expands so that the max can pledge.
You're doing the right things - recs, the right attitude. Good extracurriculars and sharp wardrobe will help.
Just stay open to any sisterhood, and you'll find yours! As a rushee from last year said, "Open your mind AND your heart, and you'll find your home."
