legacy
by: concerned momWhat grounds does a sorority have to drop a legacy? Is it because she doesn't fit? I've monitored this site for several weeks. I had a daughter who was a legacy and dropped at Alabama. She was beautiful, smart and super involved. She was a member of Freshman Forum, ODK and was instrumental in restarting the SGA. She was also selected most outstanding Junior and a member of 31 . What I'm trying to say is just because you come a small town you shouldn't be dropped . That must have been the only reason. Anyway, she ended up pledging another sorority and they got all the glory.

They don't have to provide any sort of reason. As a sorority member, you should know that. A number of the sororities on campus (especially the "holy 6") could fill two or three pledge classes with legacies. They CANNOT pledge every legacy. Nor would they want to.
How long ago was this? Wasn't it 20 or more years ago that SGA was suspended? How long are you going to hold onto this? Listen, I understand - my daughter was completely dropped by all the groups, despite having friends in many of them and being a legacy. I will NEVER know why...and neither will you.
It obviously didn't bother your daughter. She went on to pledge another group and had a highly successful college career. She is living HER life....you can't relive YOURS through HER.
Take joy in today! You probably have grandchildren now - enjoy them now, and let the past stay in the past!
God bless you and your family...and Roll Tide!

You know that you've just given away so much information about your daughter? I'm pretty sure a small amount of research would reveal who she is. I'm sorry that your daughter was dropped, but you need to move your helicopter away from her. She's her own person and she doesn't have to be a member of your sorority. Obviously Whatever sorority your daughter is in now has helped her to succeed and given her a chance that your house was not. Grow up. I would be embarrassed if my mom came on here and was posting stuff like this about me.

With more sorority membership being more popular these days, we also have more legacies rushing. In my pledge class alone, there were 43 legacies (not just to our chapter, but to our sorority as a whole), and there were more legacies going through recruitment than the size of an entire pledge class. Legacy (unless you're a double or triple legacy to that chapter or have a sister in house) does not really mean that much anymore because it doesn't really make you special because there are so many legacies. It really only gives you a courtesy invitation to the second round--the rest is on the pnm. Have you ever considered that your daughter did not fit in with the current actives in your house?

She will and she knows nothing about my concerns. She is very excited about meeting all the different girls. This was something I needed to know because I have not really been involved for years. I write an occasional rec but that is all. Again, thank you all for your input.
