I'm a junior in high school right now out of state in North Carolina, should I email fraternities now or wait another year? Also what can I say without hurting my chances for getting a bid?

Dude you need to get a grip. Don't call the house. Keep in touch with buds from your hs and try to drop in once or twice. Get on the radar naturally. Cold calling will make you a joke

I'm from North Carolina too and I'll tell you my experience. I'll preface this by saying I didn't pull the trigger on Alabama until January of my senior year, so our experiences won't be the same, but I think this will help:

I didn't live in Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham area so the number of people I knew at Alabama was very limited. In fact, I only knew one person in a fraternity from my hometown, but in truth our knowledge of each other was only through a mutual friend I hardly knew. After reading everything on here, I quickly became concerned that this one guy would be the only way for me to get into a fraternity.

During a long holiday weekend my mom and I decided to visit Alabama for greek preview weekend and to take a tour of the school, and while I was down there I got into contact with this guy from my hometown for the first time. We met up, I visited his house (top 10 but nothing spectacular) and we had entirely clashing personalities. It frightened me to think that this guy, the only person who could give me a bid, was also so different from me. I left that weekend on his and a few other fraternities rush lists after meeting reps at greek prevoew but I was still very confused about fraternities and where I stood with them.

About a month later my future roommates invited me down to Alabama after promising to get me into a few of the biggest rush parties of the spring (if you're on anyone's rush list next spring you'll be invited) and I met with three different..,

fraternities that I instantly clicked with (still among the top 10, mind you). It was refreshing, and gave me a whole new perspective even though I was definitely late to the party in terms of getting a bid. I ended up getting bids from all 4 of the fraternities I had talked to and for the most part I had my roommates, three total strangers I never knew until meeting them that weekend, to thank.

I didn't go to any rush events after that and I didn't really keep in contact with anyone other than the occasional "Can you make it to [insert event]?" "Nah, sorry I can't," and that was just fine. Bama Bound I talked to some people, but that was it. I never really did anything other than contemplate who I would choose until school rolled around, and now I'm in the fraternity I wanted.

So here's my point, from a fellow Carolinian who felt like they were pressured to make connections and get bids despite being behind the curve: you're going to find the right fraternity if you just play it out casually. Talk to guys from your hometown, go out to parties with your roommates, be a fun guy. You'll only stress yourself out and cause a mess if you email every rush chair on campus asking for information. Good luck man, hopefully your senior year goes well and you find the right fraternity for yourself when the time comes.
