pkt

by:

For all of you people that think that Alabama Greek life is the epicenter of Greeks... The answer is no. PKT is not just a Texas thing. PKT is usually the top 3 houses at many places especially the prestigious institutions. Harvard only has the 3 or 4 houses because that is all that has been accepted up until now. All 3 PKT are strong throughout Yale and the other IVies. They are also strong at Duke, Stanford, MIT, Emory, UVA, USC, Vanderbilt, UCLA, SMU, Chicago, Illinois, UT Austin, Baylor, and other academically strong schools. This is not to say there aren't other strong houses but these 3 have a long tradition of being the most exclusive at the top schools. These 3 will also not allow for chapters to be established at academically lower universities. Life does not revolve around Phi Mu except at Alabama. According to G. William Domhoff, in Who Rules America? (Seventh edition, p. 57), upper-class college women "joined one of the four or five sororities with nationwide social prestige (e.g. Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi, and Delta Delta Delta)."

Okay that's super cool and all except most of us are never going to move to Cambridge or New Haven or even above the Mason Dixon so I'm not sure why you want us to care. Asserting your superiority perhaps? Whatever makes you feel good. Tell me, are you a P, a K, or a T?

This explains why the Alabama girls going through rush tend to be set on old row houses, most of which are stronger at Alabama than they are nationally, over new row houses which tend to be houses that are stronger nationally than they are at Alabama. A girl who never plans to leave Alabama typically wants to join a house that is popular with the girls who went to her high school and who will be part of her social circle when she returns to her hometown (or a similar town) in Alabama. Girls who are coming from out of state and who don't intend to stay in Alabama after graduation are more open to houses that are strong in the states that they come from and that may provide stronger networking opportunities out of state when they launch their careers.

I responded to another thread about PKT and was told I was out of mind and that it was only a Texas thing. I am not from Alabama but this is on my sister's short list of schools so I was checking out your page. I have to say- I am not very impressed by the comments I have seen. I pray to God that my sister goes somewhere else.

I'm sure your sister will be fine wherever she goes, Alabama or not- a good rule of thumb is to not take anything said on an anonymous board too seriously.

At this bitter girl. She is a kappa from either texas or a&m and really has a very elitist attitude about greek life. Which is a shame. Greek life is meant to up lift all our members. There is alot of jealously and hate coming from this post and all it does is cause division and hurt. Alabama greek system is incredible and we our very happy with our system.

You sound so defensive and a little jealous. All that matters is your time in college and especially at alabama! I doubt anyone will hire out in the professional world based on your greek affiliation! And trust me you can find connection in every state, so don't try the networking card. Yes, even in the so called Upper crust areas! You would be ignorant to think otherwise. NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, etc..... All have alumni chapters in all old row houses! All with great connections.

In texas!Omg!!!! ONE of the most important aspects of greek life is to learn to be more elevated in behaviors such as being gracious and kind. You are doing nothing for the pkt as you call it but making everyone think they are a bunch of rude and uncultured group of girls. By the way phi pi is not at emory kappa is not at MIT and pi phi is not at Harvard but alpha pi and Adpi are at many of these schools including smu and Ut. Please stop prompting this concept. It makes texas look bad and we do not all feel the same as you

I will preface by saying yes I am an Alabama "PKT" but that doesn't exist here or in other SEC schools. When it comes to most girls, you should rush for the strength of the chapter at the school you're in because that's with whom you'll make the most memories. All sororities on the national level are very good otherwise they wouldn't have survived 100+ years. However with that being said, it is absolutely true that certain sororities are powerhouses in certain areas, and networking can be a very very powerful tool. My sister is PKT in Texas who will soon graduate from Law School and her first job will be at a law firm where her grandbig's family are partners. PKT is powerful in Texas and schools out of the SEC so that explains the mindset that a lot of PNMs are coming in with. I'm not saying that they should be any better than the rest here, but for the girls from the Deep South who weren't aware, it is a real thing and it is relevant to out-of-state girls.

My bff is also a recent graduate. NYU law, undergraduate from bama where Not PKT and landed her first job at
A large law firm in Dallas...... Because she's smart. Didn't need a grand big to help her. You're reaching and trying oh so hard to get in digs. Not working. Not convinced. You simply don't understand Bama greek life. Btw, I'm from Indiana . Not the Deep South .

It's nice that your best friend got a good job without help. It's not nice to imply that the above poster's sister wasn't qualified for her job. Sometimes connections matter, sometimes they don't. I personally think it's great that her grandbig's family was able to help her start her career. Shows the type of sisterhood that we all admire.

The original poster is the one who implied she got the job because of her affiliation. I highly doubt a law firm hired because of greek letters. Totally fabricated story.

OP and poster 5 don't seem to be saying the same things at all, not sure where you got that from

If you ignore the networking potential of your sorority post-graduation then you are giving up on of the most important benefits of membership. Our founders didn't create our organizations so that we could chase boys and party. They created our organizations to empower women in an environment dominated by men. Why shouldn't women benefit from the same sort of networking that has been going on among men for ages? It absolutely makes sense to consider the strength of the network in the area you intend to work.

What would be a good reason for someone so worried about connections when they leave Alabama be coming to Alabama in the first place? Poster seems so down on sec and Deep South girls.....why are you concerned at all? Why put yourself in an Alabama discussion?

By: Why
by: hmmmmmm

I have to agree with this. I really do believe this is just an attempt to pass the pkt thing on to other schools. This. entire thread is an agenda to try and make them the best at alabama. What this girl fails to realize is that traditions and history of a greek system begins at the school not this website. Our top sororities whether you like it or not earned it. They are phi mu xo alpha gam kd ddd axo and kkg. Many of these have been hear for over 100 years. Our mothers and grandmothers are part of these sororities history. If you are so concerned with your strange Pkt obsession you really should not come to the powerful SEC greek system where the greek system is the strongest and our connections are different

Kappa has just as many bad chapters as any other big sorority, except some of their worst ones are at huge important Greek schools. You are delusional. Take a road trip and discover Kappa chapters at schools like Auburn, UF, FSU etc. Just as awful as you claim others are.

As someone in one of these sororities at Bama, I will say that I have never met a single girl in my house who has the mindset of the OP. Only the girls from Texas even really know what PKT is and every single one of my sisters knows that here it's different. Of course our houses have pride in our history and our distinguished alumnae but I've never heard my sisters claim that we're "better" than the others. I would say that I apologize on behalf of my sisters, but the OP doesn't even go to Alabama and she's throwing shade. I've actually seen this very same Domohoff quote on other schools' Greekrank pages where PKT isn't a thing trying to stir up trouble. OP is a troll ladies, don't feed the troll.
