Do recommendations have to be completely by strictly alumni or are there some chapters that allow actives from other schools to write them?

You can have actives write then as well. As long as they have been initiated into the sorority, it does not matter if they are in college or an alum. Good luck and welcome to UA!

Yeah that's bad advice. Unless explicitly stated by the chapter, most only accept letters from alumni

If you know girls in the chapter now, ask them who wrote their recs. And then go to those ladies...but if they don't know you or your family, don't expect them to write you a rec out of the blue.
Bottom line - start asking NOW to find sorority alumnae. You need women who know you or your parents. They're out there.
I'm always amazed by young women from big cities who swear they can't find anybody in my sorority. And I mark them down as lazy. They get released from our house.
