I'm from a huge high school in St. Louis & chose Alabama (as did 12 of my classmates) for a variety of reasons. But mainly because Bama offers very generous scholarship $$$ just for getting a 31 on the ACT. It has been a blast & I've made great friends. I feel the SEC schools are going after strong students. But, to be fair to my friends back home, sorority Rush at Mizzou is brutal, too! 1,800 - 1,900 girls, legacies mean nothing & most houses cut at a 3.6 GPA & 25 ACT score. I think it's hard at all big schools & feel fortunate to have gotten into a strong sorority here.

Rush is going to be very competitive this year... There are so many amazing sororities at Alabama...if you are lucky enough to get into ONE of them....consider youself LUCKY!!! Rush this year is going to be fierce!!! Sooo many girls going through Rush..record breaking numbers!!! Be happy with the sorority you pledge..it is going to be difficult to get into a sorority this year!!

The oldest sororities and fraternities that have been here
new row are the older sororities and they are usually more likely to take a yankee but old row are filled by hometown girls and guys and alot of from the south
if we're being real, the old row sororities already have their eyes set on girls already, as i mentioned before, most are local or from the south and visit often or have strong ties before recruitment begins
it shouldn't matter though

Based on the responses below which explain that many Bama sororities "already have their eyes on girls" or have hometown connections to "Old Row" houses, I may as well forget about getting into a sorority since I'm a "Yankee" from Chicago? I'm very discouraged by what I've read on this site. I have a 3.7 GPA, am a two sport athlete(volleyball & swimming) & do a lot of print & runway modeling. I chose Alabama because my parents have a summer home in the Gulf Coast & I wanted to do something different. It's disappointing to hear that many girls are "per-selected". I'm beginning to feel like I should have gone to Illinois, Wisconsin or Mizzou like all of my friends.
