cuts for not having rec letter

by:

Which houses would be most likely to cut you early on if you don’t have a rec letter? How much weight do they really hold?

My house used to demand a recommendation letter for us to extend a bid to a PNM. That meant that if we loved a girl and she didn’t have a recommendation, we had to schedule time for her to meet an alumnae in the house to write a rec for her before pref night. That is no longer the case. However, it might still be the case for other houses needing a rec from someone in order to extend a bid. When you have over 2500 girls going for 150 spots per house, anything to help you stand out more helps.

IDK who the hell you are, but having a pnm meet with an alum during rush would never happen because it would be an enormous rush infraction. That has been the case for decades.

^ agree that comment is from a troll.

Meeting with an alum would be illegal and the house would get in huge trouble.

To be honest, there are so many girls with an identical or better resume than yours. If you don’t have a rec you’ll be cut for someone that made the effort to get one.

All of Old Row except Phi Mu will cut you before Philanthropy for not having a rec. publicly Phi Mu says they no longer accept recs, but iykyk.

Top New Row will cut either before Sisterhood or Pref.

Bottom New Row is willing to overlook it. They have alums they can call and have write you a rec during rush, if they need to. No house will ever ask you to meet an alum in person DURING rush to write you a rec.

Alum here. That first comment is obviously from someone who has never been in a sorority and has picked up some things here and there, maybe from this awful site, trying to play pretend sorority girl.

The real rec info: Recs hold very little weight. Most nationals have, blessedly, dropped the requirement, and there is one sorority here that no longer even accepts them. With that said, it would never hurt to have one for the more desired, stronger recruiting houses. And many sororities don't require that a rec be written only by an alum now, which makes it easier.

Wrong. On this campus, letters of recommendation from people that know the PNM personally are still very important at the OR houses.

PM is the only one that has completely eliminated letters of recommendation forms on their National website. However, PM will still accept a letter from an alum introducing a PNM to their chapter. PM legacies have them sent on their behalf all the time.

I guess “meet” is a word that was poorly chosen by me. The alumnae would have to write a rec based on the group leader that really wanted the girl. The alumnae might need to question other members, as a rec takes 20-30 minutes to write and they don’t want to write 100 of them. Every house has alumnae advisors working during recruitment. They don’t vote but they do assist in the process. Recs used to be part of that process.

KKG, KD, XO, DDD, and AXO will cut you if you do not have a letter of recommendation. Maybe AGD but your high grades could avoid that. All of these houses see so many Bama chapter legacies go through every year that they have to make grade and connection cuts. It's the truth.

NR is more forgiving because the Southern towns that many PNMs still come from don't have a bunch of moms, grandmas, aunts, friends and classmates that came from the Bama chapter of a NR house.

Rec isnt the same as legacy.

I am in one of the OR houses listed above. It was the one house I couldn't find a rec for - didn't know anyone - my house wanted me bad enough and it was policy to have a letter of rec on file before pref. They gave my social resume to a local alum and that alum wrote a rec on my behalf without ever meeting me or talking to me. It was all behind the scenes - I didn't know it even happened until after I was initiated.

If they want you bad enough - the recruitment team will make it happen.

They don't need to make it happen anymore because almost every national has dropped the requirement. So if you don't have a rec and they really want you, they'll just take you to pref and that's that. But recommendations are still very much a thing, lots of pnm's do get them, and having one offers an edge at houses where they matter. Recs are now good to have, but not need to have.

If you think you’re getting a bid to Alpha Gam without a rec then you have no idea how Bama rush works.

The rec is a signal to houses that you are serious about rush and that you know how it works.

Not having a rec shows that you’re not serious and you didn’t put in the effort. There’s literally no excuse to not have a rec for every house. You can find alums to write recs anywhere. Your teachers, neighbors, mom’s friends (have them ask on their social media), your friends’ moms, families you babysit for, etc.

I’m about to be a sophomore in an old row house I had recs for, but during rush I only had recs for AGD, KKG, KD, and XO. I still got invited back for sisterhood to AXO, DDD, and PM without recs. This is not super typical at all but my rush experience was largely based on my stats. Personally, I’m from a large metropolitan area in the south, have decent grades, good reputation, and good involvement. I also have friends that only had recs for one or two houses and still got their full lists back everyday. It definitely is a bigger deal to help you stand out (ESPECIALLY OR) but sororities look at your high school stats before recs become a factor.

I can say for certain that AXO and XO require recs by preference in order to extend a bid, as stated in their bylaws. If you really stand out you may not be cut immediately and they’ll get an alumna/in AXO’s case their collegiate recruitment information board to write you a letter (which you’d likely never know happened) in order to extend a bid if they really want to.
