Rushing at 22???

by: internationalstudent

Hi everyone :)

I'm an international student from the uk joining bama this year and i really want to rush - however i'm concerned my age will be a big factor as i am 4 years older than majority of the girls going through rush.. has anyone older rushed and able to share their experience?

Or are there any sororities that are known to be more open to OOS / international girls?
Being from rural scotland the world of greek life is very new to me so feeling a bit out of my depth

It's not the international bit, it's your age that is more of an issue. If you are rushing as a freshman then your options will be limited for being so much older. If you are rushing as an upperclassmen then you might have a slightly better rush. But regardless, your experience as a member might not be so great because think about this: your new member class is who you bond with and where you find your friend group which is mostly 18-19 year olds and maybe a few 20 year olds, the older members are already set and bonded in their friend groups, and the seniors aren't around much because they've already done it all and are thinking about graduating and moving on. So the new member class that you would be doing everything with are just out of high school and there really is a vast difference in maturity and experience in four years. It might be hard to find friends, and would you be able to or even want to connect with girls that age? I would never tell someone not to try because you never know, I would say KAT or SK could be options for you. But a much, much older pnm is kind of hard to fit in at most houses.

Thank you i appreciate it :)

My grandmother is from Alabama was a KAT (not at bama) so that's definitely been a part of my life for a while so i have a little bit of perspective

Search on Lauren Norris's rush videos on YouTube. I think she rushed at 21 and talks about what it was like as an older student.

Without being rude you might struggle with Old Row sororities based on your age and being from out of state. They normally pick girls from their high schools etc and even though rec letters aren’t always needed it would be good to get one from your grandmother and any of her friends from different sororities.
Not to say you’d be dropped immediately if you want to rush go for it - I’m sure you’ll find a house for you! There’s also always Co-Ed’s!

Welcome!

You will be welcomed in many different houses where age doesn't matter to them.

Look at PM, Pi Phi, AGD, ADPi, and KAO.

Great advice! As long as you meet the gpa requirements and interact well during rush, the houses mentioned above would be great options. Good luck in finding your home!

I think you should include DDD & DZ too - they're above small-town high school cliques like the others listed above.

Go for it! Don't let anyone discourage you. My friend rushed at Ole Miss being slightly older and had grown up outside of the states and didn't feel it put her at a disadvantage, other than most girls knowing of each other pre rush week.
You're going to have the best time and you never know - being an older international student might make you a top pick :)
Best of luck and roll tide <3

Anyone saying not to try an old row sorority is being defeatist - yes they are more selective and tend to choose girls they know, however if you’ve got the grades and the right attitude you’ll have a good a chance as anyone else!
Your age may be a difficult one but I would say depending how you used the time after high school could actually be super beneficial! I know it would be great to have an international student in our house who can bring a breath of fresh air to sorority row!! I would also recommend as many rec letters as you can, being OOS and older. If your grandma is a Theta she may have friends in other houses that would be willing to help you!
Best of luck and we’ll see you during recruitment!

Think ive figured out who this pnm is, a couple zeta girls follows her and like all her pictures.. can i smell dirty rushing

No, you are not smelling anything but your own sad, negative self with no life. I'm not in that sorority but here to clarify that it is fine for members to follow pnm's and not an infraction. Panhellenic decides what dirty rushing is, not you, or your fellow tiktok voyeurs.

Following a pnm on instagram is not dirty rushing ... They could be a family member of a current zeta member for all you know. Get over yourself please

I want to say thank you to everyone for their advice!
Also to clarify - no bama girls follow me on instagram so you’ve definitely found the wrong person!

I wouldn’t do it at 22. Most of your pledge class would be 4 years younger than you and I’m going to be honest …..you will be dropped by a ton of houses because of your age.
