Rushing at 22???
by: internationalstudent
Hi everyone :)
I'm an international student from the uk joining bama this year and i really want to rush - however i'm concerned my age will be a big factor as i am 4 years older than majority of the girls going through rush.. has anyone older rushed and able to share their experience?

It's not the international bit, it's your age that is more of an issue. If you are rushing as a freshman then your options will be limited for being so much older. If you are rushing as an upperclassmen then you might have a slightly better rush. But regardless, your experience as a member might not be so great because think about this: your new member class is who you bond with and where you find your friend group which is mostly 18-19 year olds and maybe a few 20 year olds, the older members are already set and bonded in their friend groups, and the seniors aren't around much because they've already done it all and are thinking about graduating and moving on. So the new member class that you would be doing everything with are just out of high school and there really is a vast difference in maturity and experience in four years. It might be hard to find friends, and would you be able to or even want to connect with girls that age? I would never tell someone not to try because you never know, I would say KAT or SK could be options for you. But a much, much older pnm is kind of hard to fit in at most houses.

Without being rude you might struggle with Old Row sororities based on your age and being from out of state. They normally pick girls from their high schools etc and even though rec letters aren’t always needed it would be good to get one from your grandmother and any of her friends from different sororities.
Not to say you’d be dropped immediately if you want to rush go for it - I’m sure you’ll find a house for you! There’s also always Co-Ed’s!

Anyone saying not to try an old row sorority is being defeatist - yes they are more selective and tend to choose girls they know, however if you’ve got the grades and the right attitude you’ll have a good a chance as anyone else!
Your age may be a difficult one but I would say depending how you used the time after high school could actually be super beneficial! I know it would be great to have an international student in our house who can bring a breath of fresh air to sorority row!! I would also recommend as many rec letters as you can, being OOS and older. If your grandma is a Theta she may have friends in other houses that would be willing to help you!
Best of luck and we’ll see you during recruitment!
