Truth about Southern Vs Northern PNMs

by:

Time to post something based on facts not opinions. It’s very obvious at this point that any old row house not pulling top OOS girls has fallen behind. I’m not talking just Southern, but the girls being pulled onto campus by scholarships with beauty and brains.
This isn’t 2005 where you could ignore the 50 random out of staters who showed up for rush. The houses that have continued to not pursue top Northern girls are falling in rankings and giving opportunities to other houses.
You will continue to see posts about certain houses not wanting Northern girls, but the truth is even Old Row is paying attention now to the top candidates, no matter where they are coming from.
Clean up your social media, be willing to have an open mind and Southern and Northern girls realize that the houses will all be fighting over the top candidates regardless of your zip code. Trust me, they see through all of it at this point.

What’s the OR appeal to the OOR pnm?

Trying to find a way in with a group of old HS friends of each other already connected? An in with fraternities of guys from these locales - who mostly want to hang out with old HS friends too? Struggling to get a voice and leadership roles where patterns are set? Connections in the southern towns of these folks?

I get the appeal to pnms where these things “work”, but to the typical pnm from OOR, there’s is not particular appeal to these houses. Neutral at best, maybe even a negative.

You can’t be all things to all people. \n\n\n\n\n

There were posts deleted. This thread is interesting but from what I observed during Rush out of region and out of state were not treated badly. My friends all ended up in a mix of old and new row. I think some of the responses on here are trolls stirring the pot.

I think the point of this post is Bama has created a model to improve the university over the last decade plus. As this has happened it has brought changes to the Greek system. Like it or not a diverse group of pnms are coming to Bama from OOR and they bring with them beauty and brains as the initial poster stated. Over time there will be fewer Southern pnms with those connections and houses that don't open their eyes will suffer. It is not about Northern pnms wanting to be part of OR it is really about the realization of change. Either move with it or get left behind.

The Old Row chapters that are always top are the ones that mix in top candidates regardless of the state they call home.

Fr like nobody cares about ranks and they change. You can be bragging about being in a “top tier house” 10 years from now to a student and that house you were in that was top could be bottom. Ranks are made up. Everyone ranks theirs high and the ones they don’t like low. It’s all lies

what makes someone a top candidate

I think too many Southern girls assume they have an in with OR houses but they have a lot more competition now, because more top students are coming to Alabama from the North, drawn by scholarships. No one is guaranteed a place anymore. Legacies, nope- those legacy policies are going away. Letters of recommendation don’t hold the weight that they use to. Also the dynamics within houses are changing and execs are realizing that bringing in only local girls not only doesn’t look great- it sets them back for the future classes as well.
Southern girls we are sorry, but you have some competition and it’s not going to stop. So yes agree with the original poster. Old row is seeing through it all.

there are girls with beauty and brains being drawn from all over the south by scholarships as well. This isn't just a northern thing

@rtr girl bless your heart!
the op never said southerners don’t get scholarships too. You know Southerners prefer almost anyone from the South over anyone from the North as well as anyone. All they’re sayin’ is some of their girls deserve a chance too

There are several considerations in this- one is that there have been repeated posts steering PNMs into thinking that they should not want to join certain houses if they are from the North, because those houses will make them feel like an outsider.
Two is that the girls from the South do not “want to join” the houses that “typically take the Northern PNMs”.

The original poster is simply saying that there is now competition across the board, regardless of a PNM’s zip code. Over time, it has become this way and that for any house to really thrive, it has to adapt to the changes.

There are other things happening right now- that were mentioned. Legacy policies have been changed by most of the Panhellenic national organizations. I’m sure this is a bit of a shock, especially to Moms of Southern girls who thought that their daughters would have multiple legacies and have some sort of “in” to the desired houses. This has changed, and it changed very recently.

Second is that letters of recommendation no longer are as important as they used to be and can’t actually keep certain candidates out anymore, if they don’t have them. Again this benefitted Southern PNMs more than Northern- where this practice is not nearly as established.

So what is left? How about go on GreekRank and tell northern candidates that they won’t be wanted in Old Row at all. Tell them they won’t fit in, they won’t be happy. Tell them how great the other houses would be for them.

This is all the Mothers and Alums. It’s not how the execs in the houses see things. It’s not how the student see things either.

Trust me, Old Row is going to be competing for the top girls regardless of if they are North, South, their race, and any other factor. All of this is being posted by Moms with too much time on their hands, freaking out because they realize they no longer have control over who goes where.

Don’t worry about it. Follow your heart.

WTF "Moms of Southern girls who thought that their daughters would have multiple legacies" doesn't make a bit of sense. So many outsiders chiming in on here who obviously aren't Greek and have no idea what they are talking about.

Wait.

Are you suggesting “southern Moms” are here discouraging OOR pnms from OR houses to boost their daughter’s odds in their legacy houses?

That’s a twist.

OR now wants OOR girls? Ya! Not.
If this were true, the definition of the term “filler” wouldn’t be common knowledge on this campus.

One post saying that the OR houses now want OOR girls doesn’t make it true.

I do agree that OR needs to evolve with the changing student body…but evolving isn’t really what Southern institutions do. The OR mamas just don’t want their houses and daughters to look bad so they post something like this.
