Recommendation letters
by: RecDoes anyone know what sororities Will actually cut you solidly not having a rec letter for them? I know we’re suppose to get rec letters for all houses but I’m curious which ones will cut a PNM just for not having one

Any house would do it if it comes down to being on the fence about someone. If a house is having to decide who to invite back between great girls they like equally, the deal breaker is going to be the rec. Without one you've done the job for them. The most desired houses will automatically cut first round for not having a rec. It's an easy cut because so many amazing girls do have them and it shows they care about that house. We can't offer a bid without a rec. Get 'em. Good luck.

Alabama is definitely one of those colleges that you need to get rec letters to maximize ur chances
however! I know for a fact that my chapter (and quite a few others as well) will ~find~ a rec letter for an unconnected PNM. this PNM really has to be strong though— good grades and resume, well-rounded, a good conversationalist, being pretty and trendy/well-dressed also helps to stand out, and just overall wow the active(s) you talked to. in that case, exec/rush committee will ask either an advisor or a local alum to write a rec letter for the girl before PNM lists are due for the next round lol. if a house has ELCs there for recruitment then they can and will write them too. this is all done without the PNM’s knowledge, of course. in fact most actives don’t know this happens bc only the girls in charge of recruitment are involved in these decisions as they include back and forth with HQ.
i wouldn’t bank on this happening to you and not at multiple houses so get as many recs as u can girlies!!!

Not sure why people on this thread are arguing about whether recs should be required or not. It isn’t up to Alabama’s individual chapters, that’s a requirements from nationals so even if we wanted to change the rules we don’t have the power to. Getting that many recs can definitely be tedious but it really isn’t hard. I had zero Greek connections and got all of mine by reaching out to teacher, neighbors, members of my community through Facebook groups etc. it can be done easily if you put in the effort, and that little bit of work you put in absolutely can have a huge impact on the outcome of your rush. Instead of complaining on greekrank, get to finding those recs so you can maximize your options

NONE.
Based on my, and others, experiences - haven’t found a house that would not accept you without a rec letter.
I got confused and thought a family friend was in the house I got a bid to, but turned out it was a mix up. So I had no rec letter there. Got to pref with another house without one as well. Full card and I’m talking about “top houses”.
Know others with bids without letters and definitely many who get to sisterhood and pref without letters. \n\n\n\n\n

I am curious to know how many rec letters are written by someone who doesn’t actually know the PNM personally? They are written by a parents’ friend’s daughter or a cousin’s friend. I would think a first cut by grades would be a better representation of a PNM then a Rec letter. Most girls show they care about the process just by completing the application and video which required more time then actually applying to Alabama. If two girls make it to the end then I would think the final decision wouldn’t be off of a rec letter but some other quality one PNM posses that the other doesn’t. I know Phi Mu doesn’t require them and PI Phi nationals were voting at the end of June whether or not to keep or get rid of the rec letters.
