Old Row vs New Row
by: QuestionWhat does being “new row” or “old row” entail? Like how did the old row and new row fraternities and sororities get their status?

In reality, Old Row is a fraternity tag. Sororities are not actually old row or new row. They actually are tagged by circles. There are certain Fraternity houses that have had houses on University Blvd during their whole existence and they are called Old Row as other houses moved to Jefferson in the 1950's and 1960's as they need bigger houses. Thus the distinction was made. What it became was the good old boy network in Mountain Brook, Montgomery and Mobile supported and endorsed the old row houses. Now it is University Houses and Jefferson Houses. What has become a recent phenom is sororities using the Old Row moniker because they were the houses that were invited to the Old Row Fraternity party. Basically those houses focus their membership on the same areas as Old Row Fraternities do. In reality is means nothing.
