to girls that are planning on COB

by:

you CAN rely on COB happening this year. everyone wants to scare you bc they want you to think you’re wrong for doing it. you’re not. if you didn’t feel like you were having a good time during rush, it was hard to get a good feel for the houses, you were nervous, anything. that is OKAY. i know plenty of houses are planning to do COB as soon as bid day ends. people love to say it’s not happening to scare you into continuing the process. you’re going to get through this! it’s a weird year. we understand. please don’t feel bad. COBing is SO FINE. lots of girls have done it and are happy. you can too!

I doubt you are even in a house. Houses can't plan to do COB. Panhellenic sets the average chapter total after recruitment, and only those houses under total can even do COB, and that's if they even want to.

The only houses that can plan to cob are the ones who have lower chapter total and don’t meet quota due to....PNMs dropping out of recruitment bc they didn’t like being invited back to that house.

This ^^^ COBs will likely happen but the options will be limited to the houses people wanted to "drop."

Like ^^ have said, some houses can plan to COB

But those houses tend to be the ones ppl have left when they drop out of recruitment

For example, I wouldn’t be surprised if SDT is hoping to COB bc they are smaller than other chapters. And that’s fine... they are a good house with a lot to offer. But it doesn’t make sense for a PNM to drop out if they have SDT back for pref in that case

I think SDT is likely to be overwhelmed by the huge surge in their chapter size after participating in formal recruitment. While their intake was all through COB in the recent past, I wonder if they will be less inclined to do it this year.

You might be right too. It really depends on their recruitment strategy

I’m viewing it as a soft re-colonization effort versus a more traditional recruitment, with the current members as leaders in that effort

IMO viewing it like that be to their benefit, but I’m honestly not sure what their plans are

I hope you’re right

The houses that will COB (and especially those that are planning to COB) are the “bottom” houses y’all had left before dropping

Seriously it’s true. I don’t understand why you have your hopes up that this yr things are different. Use your brain and think logically, not emotionally

Is it better to go ahead and sign up for COB or wait for the spring when maybe more girls have dropped?

The houses eligible for COB last fall (2019) were:
Alpha Delta Chi, Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Delta Tau, and Sigma Kappa

The houses eligible for spring (2020) were:
Alpha Delta Chi, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha

Panhellenic will post the eligible houses after recruitment is over and chapter total has been revised. ADChi(Christian sorority)and SDT (in the past) primarily used COB for recruitment. Remember that just because a house is eligible doesn’t mean they COB tons of girls, and sometimes these are girls who didn't even do formal recruitment. Don’t rely on COB for a bid.

By: don't rely on COB
by: yes

YES! And just to add, who is available to COB in the spring really depends on a number of factors like if anyone drops or how many people graduate in December. It's not like these same houses are COBing every spring...

You'll see various sororities eligible to COB but that doesn't mean they are actually COBing or even if they do they may only have a few spots, which are quickly taken by people who are besties with many of the sorority members and girls who the sorority has hand picked who haven't gone through recruitment.

I would highly encourage you not to drop and to take a bid from the house that wants you this formal recruitment. No one can rely on COB ever, and especially not this year.

If you drop, make that an informed decision knowing that that choice means you will most likely be independent.

Girls will say all sorts of stuff about COB and going through recruitment again as a sophomore, but for the most part they are just being polite to you and trying not to kill your hopes because that would be hurtful.

If you drop, you are making this decision so make it with eyes wide open.

I’m not gonna get my hopes up but is it possible to get a cob from a house that cut u if they end up getting less girls?

No, that’s really not likely. And certainly not something you should plan for.

It’s more likely that they would want to COB girls who they invited back but had more options or girls who didn’t even go through rush but are friends with actives.

I would really encourage you to take a chance with the houses that do still want you instead of dropping out. If a house has cut you, they have made a decision that they wanted other people over you.

It is possible that they would take a chance on someone who is borderline, but the borderline cases are pretty few because those girls usually end up joining another house. I've been in those discussions at my house and we would figure out why that person was cut and what the problem was during recruitment. If someone was cut for being awkward during conversation (most PNMs think they are great conversationalists but this is not actually the case) or had some sort of red flag, we are not likely to ask them back for COB. Our actives are looking out for other girls we can recruit who may not have gone through recruitment instead.

If you were dropped from all houses, I'm really sorry but there is something that you need to fix before trying again, whether that's your GPA or your conversation skills or your resume. Conversation skills probably had something to do with it, even if you think conversations went really well. If that is the case, then work on getting a high GPA, getting leadership experience in a couple of campus organizations, improving conversation skills with strangers (work on this, I am serious), and making connections with sorority members.
