You rank a house ABC number 1 and XYZ number 2 in your list.
The houses make a list of like 200 girls that they want to be their 2020 pledge class. Then the bid matching process begins.
Generally, the bid matching process TENDS to favor the PNMs number 1 choice. So if you’re a top 200 PNM on sorority ABCs list and you rank them as 1 on your list, you’ll get matched with ABC.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO RANK BOTH HOUSES IF YOU HAVE 2 LEFT. Do not suicide bid. It can mess up your chances of getting your number one house.

The chapters will tank every PNM who attended their Pref party. If you attended Pref, you are somewhere on their bid list.
Quota is set as the # of PNM’s who attended 1+ Pref party divided by the number of chapters on campus.
Then the computer will take each PNM’s Pref card and try to match PNM’s to their #1 choices. If quota is 100 (just to keep it simple) and you are in their top 100, congrats you match as a bid. Not all of their top PNM’s will tank the house #1 so if there are still spots in the pledge class, the computer will run through all the PNM’s again trying to match more PNM’s who ranked the chapter #1.
If the house fills to quota before your name comes up, then you match to your #2 choice. If your #2 choice is also full at that point, then you would (Most likely) match to #1 as a Quota Addition since you maximized your options. You could be added to your #2 as a QA if their chapter is much smaller than your #1.
If you had not listed your #2 on your Pref card and did not Bid Match to #1 before they filled to quota, you would not receive a bid and would not be eligible to be added to #1 as a Quota Addition.

No, you can't influence your place on the chapter bid lists in any way by your voting. The chapters never see how pnm's rank, just like pnm's never see how chapters rank.

this is real!!! let’s say you have two houses, house A and house B. You want to end up in house A.
if you tell house B that you’re 100% set on them (just to appease them), and they put you higher on their bid list than house A does, you will end up with house B.
no matter what, if you rank both houses and don’t suicide bid, YOU WILL END UP IN A HOUSE, so it doesn’t matter what you say at pref.

Still no garuntee though that will work. House A may still have you way towards the bottom of their list

If you are high enough on A's bid list, you get your first choice. If you aren't but are high enough on B's list, you get your second choice. If you don't get either, you are placed in one of your choices as a quota addition, but it might not be A.
