Legacy policies changing

by:

Just a thought, removing legacy policies will destroy the Greek system. The alumni association is strongly populated by women who want to get legacy status for their daughters. The alumni system will crumble first with fewer members and less funding and then it will trickle down to the sororities themselves. Focusing on diversifying is much more beneficial than completely eliminating the legacy system, which is an important part of extending Greek life beyond 4 years in college. Joining a legacy house is important for many girls, not all but an undeniable amount, and in many ways strengthens the sisterhood.

Your daughter is still your “legacy”, lady, she just doesn’t get a free ride through the process. Do you know how many awful legacies we have come through and we have to bring back for 1 or even 2 rounds and miss out on other great PNMs? I hope my org does what DG did.
And if our greek system is that fragile that removing one policy that benefits alumni over others, I don’t think we are going to survive regardless then.

Legacies don’t get “free rides” just an extra look. No house is required to take legacies. But if you think the alumni association will be near as strong if legacies don’t matter, you will be sorely mistaken. And no they still aren’t a legacy bc legacies have not weight at all. The alumni associations and their donations mean a lot more than people think about.

Ummm to an extent they absolutely do. Giving a pnm an “extra look” equals inviting them back. Especially at the scale our recruitment is. To deny that is delusional and dismissive to the real experiences active members are having during recruitment.

I think national organizations have decided they are okay with losing the alumnae who are only involved to have influence when their daughter rushes (these women are usually super annoying anyway). There are plenty of alumnae who volunteer and donate simply because they love it.

A little scary honestly. This will have a much bigger impact than people think.

How. Please explain how. Oooo mommy isn’t gonna donate an extra $100 this year at the philanthropy fashion show??
This is how petty these alums lives are that THIS is their biggest concern in life.

It’s not always some big ploy like that. The simple truth is many mothers won’t feel the need to pay dues and be apart of the alumnae association if their daughters legacy status isn’t there. It’s no one being mean they just will be like I don’t really want to donate money or pay dues when the alumnae association isn’t even that important to me anymore. And btw there are hundreds of thousands of alumnae that donate at least 40 a year. And that being slashed by even 25% is no small thing.

Ok then change the business model. Sororities are businesses after all? They can’t have a bail out or are they “too big to fail”?

If the only reason somebody is paying the alumni association dues is because of the legacy factor then they are not particularly good alumni anyway. Sorry if that stings, but it's true.

I think it’s great. Think how many sisters who are not a good fit but they get in because of older sis already in.

IMO girls with active sisters in house will probably still get a bid. It’s waaay too much drama to cut them.

Losing legacy status will make the sororities stronger, a direct legacy will know what it takes to get a bid and will not need favoritism to get pushed along in the rush process.
The question that should be asked is why should a sorority take a legacy? Just because some relative was a member doesn't mean the legacy will be contributing member.

Wouldn't it make a bigger impact to not require recommendations? If this legacy thing came about in the name of diversity(and the timing makes it appear so), dropping the recommendation requirement would make more sense.

Unfortunately from what I know, “recommendations” or sponsorship forms are what allow sororities to maintain their female only status. Because of course that would make sense, but that serves a larger purpose.

I think they should do away w RIFs and just have a legacy intro form. That should be the “perk” of legacy status- the sorority is notified you will be rushing. They don’t have to do anything with it but make sure they meet you day one. After that, legacies are equal to everyone else. RIFs are a waste of time for everyone involved and truly are a white privilege. This would even the playing field for ALL PNMs.

I don’t see what RIFs have to do with race...I had 0 connections to Greek life even though I’m white. My parents were first gen college students and only went to community colleges. But I asked around in my community, reached out to local alumna groups on social media and asked friends in rush chats to help connect me with people who could write them. Regardless of the color of your skin you just have to put in a little effort to find recs if you don’t have connections, which tbh shows the sororities that you’re willing to work a little and that you’re motivated

can someone explain want an RIF is

By: pls
by: Sure

RIF is the official form submitted by an alumna recommending (or sometimes not) a girl for that particular house. PNMs should try and have one of these for each house before rush. You would want to ask women in your community to write these : just to be clear, you would find a woman who was a Phi Mu in college to write one for you and etc with all the other houses. To make it easier for her to fill out, give her your senior pic and a resume of your activities, gpa, etc. Right now, most houses want these online so hard copies aren’t necessary. If you don’t know anyone in your community for a certain sorority, reach out to your local alumna chapter and they can help.
