Pros and cons of these 3 Jefferson..

by:

...houses? I’m from out of state and looking at Kappa Sigma, Delta Chi and Delta Tau Delta houses. Any thoughts on these houses or how they compare?
Thanks.

Y’all are too harsh on Jefferson and gave every house a stigma just for being on that street. If any of the above houses moved onto university they would instantly be better than Beta, Phi Psi, and Sig Ep and be competing with pike, pi kapp etc in a few pledge classes

No they won't because it is not the location that makes them good or bad. Jefferson house have been on the decline for a long time, they obviously don't have alumni support to cough up funds to build the a new house and they are not getting pledge classes that rival University houses.

The only reason Phi Psi was able to build a new house was because the athletic department gave them over $1 million to move from in front of the stadium. Definitely wasn’t from their alumni in which the 3 above houses have infinitely more support

Where the heck should they build these new houses? You act like they aren't multi-million dollar investments that require university approval, construction permits, and years of fundraising. Nowhere in the nation do fraternities so readily replace their houses as y'all seem to want. The current improvements (for both sororities and fraternities) were years in the making and required participation by both the university and the greek houses.

Also, where is all this land you think is available to improve the houses? The university hasn't even begun the phase that'll shift Jefferson Houses around, there is no land to "just build a new house." Pointing to a random open plot somewhere on campus and saying "just build there!!!" is the stupidest thing.

Heck, some houses at some institutions sink their budget into maintaining their old houses out of a sense of tradition. Tearing down the $3m mansion every twenty years because some kids don't like the paint in the basement is the most spoiled nonsense I've ever heard.

Seriously, quit complaining about the houses. If you're on here and aren't an old sorority alumni trolling, you aren't in a position to understand how improvements get made and houses get built.

Also, take a moment to realize that up until roughly 5-10 years ago, Paty Hall, Tutweiler, and Burke were roughly the standard for student housing. Riverside and Lakeside aren't that old and Rose Towers was where Pres 1&2 are.

The fraternities are in-line with what Alabama was until very recently when the University began to throw money at literally anything to make them seem more relevant on a national scale. UA didn't use to be a posh institution nor do I expect it to fully make the transition to one in the near future. The fraternities will make improvements as they see fit, not because some whiny student on Greekrank doesn't like that the basement paint is peeling.

Some Phi Psi paid to have the post removed that pointed out the fact that they were an embarrassingly horrible house for 50 years and the only reason they’re marginal today is bc of the new house the athletic dept paid for

You are so wrong. First the phi psi spent considerable money relocated there house in the 1990's from their old location to next to the stadium based on a University promise they were safe. The University broke their promise and owed them compensation to build a new house.

Second, before any house is built by any chapter they have to secured financing by the chapter, so their alumni raised the money and financed the whole build which is much more than the million the University provided.

So, like all the other chapters on University their alumni stepped up and contributed many millions to build the house, your precious Jefferson houses you are trying to defend did not.

Nope. The Jefferson houses are in the position that there is simply not any land to allow for new houses to be built at the moment (there is in the near future, check the development plan). SigEp making the move is the result of them occupying the "Swing House" after making their return, the next opening was theirs to take (the old KA house).

Acting like the alumni can roll up and go "here's $5m, let us build on university" is illogical. Where? That open sect of land you think would be viable for a house, but really isn't?

Further, tons of alumni don't see the value of a University Blvd. house because it simply doesn't matter to most (you won't care in three years). They'll expand when the university gives them the space to expand. Until then, the houses will make improvements to their current structures and exist as they are.

Seriously. Look at Delta Chi. They have one of the most powerful alumni of the University who actively advocates on their behalf. Are they not on university because the alumni wouldn't pony up, or because the University is meticulous about how it expands and utilizes the grounds it owns?

The land around Jefferson/University is insanely valuable and the university has shown to be unwilling to allow blind expansion. Everything is planned far in advance, and the fraternities are still stuck in the 90s/2000s.

Better keep improving year after year or they’re pretty much screwed when the university frees up more land for the Jefferson houses to move to (as of now looks like behind pike). One badly timed social probation would send them back to where they have historically been once all houses are on a level playing field.

if youre going jefferson these are honestly probably the 3 best options. Id say delta chi is top but it comes down to which guys you get along with the best

All 3 are solid houses. Don't listen to the "University or bust" mentality, you'll realize after freshman year it really doesn't matter.

I'd say Dchi is the best of the three, Kappa Sig second, and DTD third (unless some changes have happened in the last couple of years).

but I have to say you can end up in some mediocre houses on Jefferson that inflate their pledge classes (they bid anyone and everyone, it's harder to bond) and don't have a stable brotherhood, so be careful.

Look at all houses and find the house that is right for you, it doesn't matter where the house is located. Too many people are hung up on old stereotypes of certain houses being better than others, it is all BS.

First of all you can rush any house you want, but it is the house decides if they want you. So lose this thought they want you more than you want them. If you want to get into a great house proved to them you are worthy.

Don't listen to anyone who says to not go Jefferson. I love all the guys I've met in frats on Jefferson!

Jefferson houses tend to be a lot more chill and laid back. Most of my sorority sisters really like partying with Jefferson frats because the guys tend to be nicer and less douche-y than university frat guys who think they’re hot stuff
