OP, listen to this advice. Alabama has some great fraternities with awesome history, but their networks become limited outside of the Deep South (Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, maybe NOLA).
The unspoken truth is that cultural differences between chapters can limit your ability to network within the fraternity. SigEp and Phi Psi are both chapters where southern identity doesn't govern the chapter and both have good relations with their national networks as a result. Being a school known for parties and over-the-top Greek life doesn't help either.
Theta Chi, Pike, and Pi Kapp are solid fraternities, but their insular Alabama identities as a chapter can have consequences down the road.

One of the biggest lies you'll be sold attending UA is that the standard used to define "top fraternities" is based on metrics that apply to all men at the school. They don't.
For a good ol' boy looking to work in Montgomery, the rumors and vapid opinions are true. For a guy from Chicago looking to move back north, think twice because back home not everyone views "Southern Tradition" in a positive light, nor thinks highly of Southern Greek Life.
