You all are seriously delusional #BLM

Don’t get me wrong, alpha phis public mistakes are burned into the internet forever and are BAD for sure. But honestly, don’t you get it that ALL you have recruitment tactics that by their very nature exclude Black PNMs and POC? Rec letters? Legacy’s? Just ways to ensure your historically white orgs stay that way.

There’s literally tons of girls in Greek life that aren’t legacies...I didn’t know a single person who was Greek (My parents were both first gen college students) and still got a bid. It’s definitely not a requirement, and neither are recs. And to get recs all you have to do is make a post on your local Facebook page or reach out to a local alumni group, which is what I did since I didn’t know any Greeks. It requires you to put in a little effort, but I don’t see what that has to do with the color of your skin tbh

“If I can do it they should be able too! Something something bootstraps!”
Do you not come in here and tell me that recs are not required when literally any parent group with girls going to Bama or any other competitive recruitment school says you need to have them. On the Bama Panhellenic website they say they aren’t required, but we all know we drop a girl without 1 (or if she’s your best girl from HS then you make it work to magically get her one.) Just because it didn’t affect you doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect other people. And your lack of willingness to dismantle the structures will ultimately be your downfall and one day there will be no more Panhellenic sororities for people to join.

My house literally doesn’t look at recs at all. We don’t care. If she’s nice if she’s involved if she wants to find a group of gals who value her and want to see her succeed. That’s what we’re looking for. Not some old woman telling us she’s so sweet on a piece of paper.

you don't look at Recs until you're looking for a reason to cut the person. That's the problem.

That's one of the reasons the events leading up to sorority integration were so controversial. The girl did everything right and the sororities, under pressure from alumni and Execs, went to extreme lengths to find holes and disqualify the person. Telling a person of color to not worry about Rec Letters is like telling a person of color to not worry about the police.

Very few girls in each house are legacies for the house that they’re in. You sound like you aren’t actually part of Greek life here

RFM pretty much guarantees that we aren’t able to only take girls we know already. It’s not optional to follow the release numbers Panhellenic gives us and we’re expected to meet quota. If we only took girls we knew, our PCs would be like 50 girls (much lower for some more OOS houses). Not to mention that there are only 7 out of 17 houses that are really known for preselecting their PCs.

There are definitely issues involving race and discrimination in sorority life but I don’t think legacies and recs are the highlight, particularly now that it’s perfectly acceptable to get recs from a local alumnae chapter. IMO a bigger issue and one that is hardest to combat is individual sorority members submitting a racially biased vote.

What a pleasant way to refer to your alumna! Respect perhaps?? What names do you call your founders I wonder??

Cool story. Are you done now? Just get your damn recs in and quit making excuses.

rec letters are equally difficult to find for white pnms as poc. i went through recruitment knowing very few people involved in greek life but i was able to get recs from every house by reaching out to people on facebook.
