Srats using their platforms

by:

I follow all the sororities and while I was tapping through their stories, it was really great to see that adpi, aopi, alpha chi, dg, kappa, and tri delt have posted on their story regarding the social injustices and issues that pocs have been experiencing in this country for far too long. Obviously, making a post on Instagram won’t solve the problem, but these houses took a break from recruitment tactics to use their platforms with several thousand followers to bring attention to these issues. As a poc pnm, I would feel much more comfortable in one of these houses than in the 11 other houses that have yet to acknowledge the issue. Especially with the history of racism rooted in the Deep South and the lack of diversity I’ve seen in so many of the sororities on campus (based on their instagrams)

I know many of the IO’s of the 11 you are referring to have posted to their social media accounts showing support to POC and speaking out on the horrible event that recently took place.

KD and Chi O also posted something and I’m sure many other chapters will soon. All chapters at UA are committed to diversity and inclusion (as each chapter has a DEI officer that meets monthly to discuss racial and inequality issues plaguing the community), and while there are a few bad apples in every chapter, I believe as a WOC, that you would feel comfortable in any of the chapters. I’m saying all this to say - that while only a few chapters have posted something at this moment, I’m sure many will follow suit as they all have similar values and ideals so I would advise not to make judgments just yet about houses that haven’t hopped on Instagram. That being said, in my personal opinion, I believe many of these houses waited too late to acknowledge the issue, however, better late than never!

As a PNM I LOVE to see it! It gives the message that there are girls in the chapters that will be willing to have these conversations with me. I am majoring in Poli sci and can't stand having friends who just roll their eyes and get bored when I talk about modern social issues and injustices. Need people to talk to who will have opinions and use their voice to talk about these things!!

Definitely! I’m a poli sci major too (I’m a rising college senior) and feel like people think I get on my soap box too much but this is important!

Agreed. What a privilege it is to roll your eyes and change the subject because you're bored or uncomfortable. Don't want friends like that, apathy to everything going on is not cool.

Most of the other chapters are probably waiting for their nationals to post so they can repost it. We’re not really supposed to wing it in these situations, we always have to use the language nationals approves so we don’t accidentally misspeak.

That said I’ll be upset if any of our chapters does choose to ignore it especially if their nationals releases a statement.

I thought it was great of alpha chi to add an additional story about how they are going to take action within their chapter. Especially since their national’s statement was kind of lackluster.

Sororities using their “platforms!” You mean their pedestal I think to speak as though southern white sororities have the moral upper hand on this racial “thing.” I am white, from AL and in a sorority. Girls, LISTEN TO ME!!! Close your mouth. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps his mouth shut. You (we) have been excluding people of color since the beginning and we have no right to pretend to have any moral high ground!!!!! Southern greeks are one of the best/worst examples of systemic racism in modern life! I have repented and prayed for forgiveness...have you?

By: You just don’t get it

Yes, but they are trying to help be more inclusive. Panhellenic has made such an effort to better diversity and inclusion, as well as the individual chapters. Is it so bad that they are making an effort to try to make right with their past racism?

As a white girl who are you to tell a woc how she should or shouldn’t feel about these posts? If it makes her feel more supported and included in our Greek community it’s not your place to tell her she’s wrong for that...

Wouldn’t using a voice of privilege for good be one of the first steps in righting the wrongs?

The message was for white srats pretending to have the moral high ground on race relations if they have one or two woc.

They aren’t acting as if they have moral high ground. Do you want them to be quiet and just not acknowledge racism? I’m a WOC in a white girl house and my sisters have been nothing but kind and supportive of me and other woc in my house..:let us try to actually do good

Alabama, here we have a white lady repenting of racism and a “woman of color” rebuking her because “it’s not her place.”

I saw on the news today, they want $14 trillion in reparations, so a humble repentance before God is not going to be enough.
