What actually matters during rush
by: PnmHey I’m a PNM and have been looking into rush so much lately! I have cousins who were ZTAs but I look vastly different from them so its hard for me to take what they say and apply it to myself. I see a bunch of sorority girls that have the “stereotypical look”. Is it actually crucial to have this style of being rich, tan, blonde, & skinny? Or are sororities like ZTA, Phi Mu, Pi Phi, etc focusing on their genuine connection and personality? I don’t know if I should rethink rushing if it’s just a popularity contest.

there definitely are a few houses (which are quite easy to distinguish) that tend to get a large number of the “pretty girls.” but that certainly is not the only criteria it takes to be part of those houses! in regards to ZTA specifically, since you have a legacy connection to them, i think it is entirely worth it to give recruitment a go and see if you can “fit the mold.” but don’t be disheartened if you don’t feel right in that house! i can assure you that while some girls make recruitment seem like a popularity contest, that is not every girl’s intentions (that applies to both pnms and actives)!!! you 10000000% can find a house that will admire you for who you are as a person (:

The most important thing you should do as a PNM (any PNM) is ask yourself WHY you are rushing?
If it is only to wear certain letters or be in a certain house because of how popular they are, then yes, rethink rushing.
If it is to find a sisterhood that aligns with your values and that you feel a real connection to, regardless of "tier" or "row" then yes, definitely rush. It's here that you will find your life-long friends. And it very well could be that top house...nothing wrong with that! But it also could be another house that wasn't even on your radar going into rush. \n\n\n\n\nAfter the hoopla of Bid Day and the retreat, life turns suddenly real. Classes begin, there are tests and assignments. You may walk into your new house and suddenly no one talks to you and you may feel out of place. Where are the 100 instant new friends that you assumed you'd have? Where is the constant fun birthday party atmosphere that you envisioned? Lots of new members feel this way a few weeks in. The last thing any new member wants is to feel like she made a mistake because she didn't listen to her gut. Once you're in a house, no one cares what letters you are wearing except for you and your sisters. That's all that should matter.
Wearing sorority xyz's letters doesn't guarantee a perfect experience. Saying that you are in a "top tier" house doesn't guarantee happiness and instant friends. Go into rush with an open mind and a clear objective about what you want out of sorority life. Know the answer to WHY you are rushing. Don't act snobby and too good for any house. If you keep an open mind and make decisions based upon how YOU feel, the house you land in WILL be the right house for you...whether it is old row, new row, row your boat, top tier, bottom tier, side tier, or whatever.
Good luck to all PNM's! Keep and open mind and trust the process. It really does work but you have to stay true to yourself first.
