What is the Machine??

It’s a secret society that basically controls the student elections. They’ve had a history of vandalizing property and threatening candidates who run against it (see: the Governor’s daughter in 1992 and the boycott of Bama-Bino’s Pizza for some examples). IMO, it’s unfair that they take away Homecoming Queen and SGA positions from others just because they aren’t affiliated with Greek Life. Like seriously, SGA positions are huge resume boosters and it’s not fair to take them away from more deserving candidates.

They force people to vote for their candidates in all of the elections by threatening them with the cancellation of swaps, mixers, parties, etc for their fraternity/sorority if they don’t comply. Most people just get intimidated and go along with it.

He ran unopposed. Machine backed candidates have lost only a few times in the past, but more often than not they win.

You can be backed without being in a machine house, although as someone mentioned the list above is old. Certain NPHC groups are affiliated more closely than people think.
