How often do girls slip through the cracks

by:

I have a friend who rushed last year with a 4.0 and all her recs but she was dropped from the process and her rho chi said she just slipped through the cracks. What exactly does this mean? I have similar credentials to her and I’m scared that this will happen to me

Statistically, extremely unlikely. At Alabama, more than 90 percent of the PNMs that show up to convocation ultimately accept bids. The majority of those who do not finish the formal recruitment process make the decision to withdraw on their own. Some of those later accept COB bids.
Here is what you can do to maximize your recruitment experience:
1). Register for recruitment now and do opt in to the optional additional letter of recommendation.
2). Have a strong finish to your senior year and get your final transcript sent ASAP.
3). Make sure that you get quality recs for every sorority. Thank your recommenders promptly.
4). Clean up your social media and consider adding photos of your favorite sports, volunteer work, activities or hobbies.
5). Follow all 17 Alabama Panhellenic sororities on Instagram.
6). Read the Panhellenic Handbook.
7). Check out the websites for all 17 sororities. The first round of rush goes quickly, so learning something about the chapters in advance will help you remember which one was which.
8). Ask a sorority member you know at a college other than Alabama to practice some of the basic recruitment questions with you.
9). Plan out your recruitment outfits to find options that are appropriate for the heat and for long days with lots of walking.
10). Stock your dorm room with snacks you like because the first few days have very early mornings...you need healthy food on hand.
11). Pack a rush tote with items that will keep you cool, calm and comfortable, like cooling towels, ice water and an electronic fan with extra batteries.
12). Be yourself in every house...there will be a home for you at Alabama.

Good mom.

You only fall through the cracks if you make yourself invisible.

I was told not to worry about the additional letter of rec and only focus on the specific sorority recs. Hmmmm?

To the PNM who was advised not to submit the additional letter of rec as part of the Panhellenic registration process: if you already have submitted recs for every sorority, you will be fine.
I think it is a great opportunity, though, for PNMs that may be missing one or two rec letters to provide additional information about themselves.

The Panhellenic website says that about 5% on average are released from recruitment, with an additional 4-8% choosing to drop on their own. So last year that would have been about 110-120 girls released. Most of those are grade/rep risks— it’s unlikely that a girl will truly slip through the cracks but I guess it happens.

If the today's Panhellenic plans for partially virtual recruitment in August actually happen as described, then you will want to make sure that you have all of your rec letters in ASAP. If you are not meeting members in person in the first three rounds, then you will want the sororities to have as much positive information as possible in advance.

This year, who knows how this is going to work if there is a “partially virtual” recruitment.

In “normal” recruitment - It’s seems unlikely that a very qualified pnm slips through the cracks to the point of not getting a bid. 99 percent of girls who dont suicide or drop on their own get a bid and not to be mean, those that don’t are usually painfully shy and awkward.

I guess there may be a scenario where a very qualified girl just got terribly matched at each round and couldn’t connect with the girls she was talking to.

But usually that happens at a house or two and Falling through the cracks can mean not getting a house where you may have fit, because you just got matched with someone with whom you really didn’t connect or because someone just didnt like you. \n\n\n\n\n

Yesterday's update from Panhellenic makes this a bigger worry for many PNMs that it might be in a normal year: you will be submitting an optional one minute video for the first round, and watching videos from the sororities with your Rho Chi group.
Get all of your recs in ASAP and be thoughtful about how you represent yourself in your video.
