Rec letter requirements

by:

Which houses have internal requirements that you must have a rec letter. Ik if you don’t have one But they still like you they can get someone to write it for you but it’s an easy way to get Dropped. So which houses have the strictest requirements??

Basically all of them. Alpha Phi, DG, and Gamma Phi are newer on the row so sometimes they're more lenient but in my house we were told that if one PNM didn't have a rec letter, another did.

From my friends, all houses had someone who got to pref without a rec letter.

It’s definitely more of a thing in top houses, because they need a way to narrow down the pool. I’m in a “lower tier” house and we really only look at a rec if it’s a no rec, aka the alum is recommending we drop her.

I’m pretty sure there’s at least one house (maybe chi o?) that nationally requires a rec to get a bid, but if they really want you an advisor will do it. They’re not just going to drop a top girl. But also never assume you’ll be a top girl.

Several houses require a rec to nationals to extend a bid. IF a girl is someone they really, really want, they will find her a rec. Recs take at least 30 minutes to complete, so if you have 2-3 alumnae in the house helping with recruitment, they would be up all day and night writing recs for girls at pref. Can you imagine? Yeah, not happening. They will write 3-4 on the fly, but that’s about it. Get in your recs.

How do they determine if you’re a top girl. Plenty of girls come in with 4.0s and a ton of involvement so how is it decided that you’re one of the “top girls”

Did you read the above? A top girl has grades, involvement, humor and an easy-going personality. She knows she brings a lot but she isn’t condescending. She also presents herself very well. She plays up her strong points without monopolizing the conversation. She’s good looking and dresses well. Her family is financially secure, even if she’s here on a presidential scholarship. She has already reached out to various clubs and organizations ( like Al’s Pals or UADM or is very much planning to do so once sign ups occur) or is on Cabaret or cheer. She has all (or most) of her recs because she put in the effort and was organized to get them. That is a top girl for ALL houses. She checks every box.

A top girl for a couple of houses knows many actives in the house(s) and they can vouch for her qualities as a future member. She has recs for those houses because she knows recent alumnae from those houses.

With so many PNMs coming through recruitment, houses try to go over recs to try to get to know something about PNMs before they come through the door. Someone will be looking for PNMs with super high GPAs and an awesome CV. Believe it or not, we actually recognize and remember some of that stuff, so your rec might help us remember you come vote time. Who has a better chance: a PNM who's good resume we have seen a few times the week before recruitment or someone completely unknown? Help yourself...Send a rec to every house.

Get more than 1!!! Well-meaning alums forget to do them allllll the time. Don’t assume they wrote one for you.

In general, upper tier houses have to make more cuts from the beginning and are more selective, so they expect and inspect recs. For sure get recs to these houses.

Lower tier houses can invite more PNMs, so they are more relaxed about recs and can have an advisor write one if they need to check it off for nationals.
