interesting observations on fraternities

by:

As I looked at the fall grade report, that was finally published, I noticed that there is a big shift in membership occurring.

Top 5 Fraternities by size:
DKE
Sigma Chi
Phi Kappa Psi
Alpha Tau Omega
Kappa Alpha

In fact the top 10 are all University Blvd Houses, it is not till you get to 11 Kappa Sigma does a Jefferson house show up in the size listings. The smallest University Blvd house is Phi Delt at 105, where many of the Jefferson houses are below a 100.

Are we seeing a shift from Old Row/New Row popularity divide to University/Jefferson divide? Most members don't live in the houses so it can't be a size of house issue, is it an out of sight our of mind occurrence?

Anyway, the trolls and dredges can blast away on the idea I posted. I just found it amusing seeing the data.

One of the reasons is that they’re 14 University houses and only 17 sororities, and then another 10 houses on Jefferson

All these large numbers tell us is that there is no filter to weed anyone out now. It's become quantity over quality. There was a time when houses like DKE had relatively small #s but that was because they were exclusive and half their pledge classes would quit before initiation because it was so hard. Fraternities have become country clubs now. Anyone can join.

That’s why phi delt is so small still.

You could make the argument that the bigger fraternities are just keeping up with enrollment. Someone has to pay for all that beer.

UA enrollment 2007: 27,000
UA enrollment 2019: 38,000
~.40 increase

DKE pledge class 2007: 34
DKE pledge class 2019: 47
~.38 increase

Some of the fraternities are so small that swaps aren’t even fun anymore. If 60% of our girls come and every single fraternity member shows up we still outnumber them 2 to 1.

Facts are being in an old row fraternity or sorority is now considered a embarrassment. People go to Old Row because they can’t get a bid anywhere else.

I rushed old row and new row and getting a bid from new row was so much easier than old row.

New row is where its at. Sigma Chi, Pike, Pi Kapp, Sig Tau and Theta Chi are killing Old Row. In the next 2 years Old Row will be a thing of the past.

"Are we seeing a shift from Old Row/New Row popularity divide to University/Jefferson divide?"

Yes

Old row/ new row is part of the culture here and will always be talked about. But it increasingly does not matter that much "on the ground" as it were.

Its the growth (dominance) of university ave houses over Jefferson that is the main thing.

Everyone on university ave is doing well...few off university ave are.

Jefferson ave houses are dying.

Almost all have less than 100 members.

Compare that with University ave houses that take 40-50 per pledge class.\n\n\n\n\n

Only AKL and DTD had below 100 in the fall with AKL really struggling. Sig Tau is on track tho, back to back pledge classes under 20 guys

Jefferson houses are usually filled with guys from far out of state that didn’t do anything for rush before they moved in. So they’re more chill but not really involved and generally have lower grades/numbers

New row on University are usually filled with slightly more southern kids and try hard guys from far out of state who are essentially jersey shore extras (pike, sigma chi, pi kapp etc) or nerdy guys (ATO, SigEp)

Old row guys are usually chill but are generally from Alabama or surrounding states

If you fit into one of these groups you probably wouldn’t like being in a house in a different group honestly

Any house on University is good.

DKE, SAE, and KA are the "most prestigious" at least in terms of what the sororities think.

All the Jefferson ave houses are small in number and no one really knows them. Not saying the guys in there are not good dudes...just that they are small and not considered "good" fraternities.
