DKE and SAE are the only old row houses that are ahead of all of new row. The top five new row houses are all basically in the mix with KA, SN, and Phi Gam, and better than Phi Delt.

Old row fraternity houses are:
Delta Kappa Epsilon
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
Kappa Alpha
Phi Gamma Delta
Sigma Nu
Phi Delta Theta

All of them are strong houses with influential alumni. They have been continuously strong too, with DKE and SAE pretty much running things since before the Civil War. SAE was founded here and DKE was the first fraternity at UA and the first fraternity in the south. All old row houses have an incredible amount of prestige and power which is why it appears at times, that the rules don't apply to them. Most of this comes from the fact that many of their alum are on the president of UA 's cabinet, board of trustees and other powerful positions. Their alum hold a lot positions within the state and federal government as well. New row houses, like beta theta Pi, have some influential alum too, but the old row houses have been at it the longest and most continuous. DKE, KA and SAE, but especially DKE, prob are the strongest right now, but in reality all old row houses are very influential. Hope this helps!

KA is a little questionable right now, I'm not sure they'd be considered a top 5 house if it weren't for old reputation, and on old row Sigma Nu is arguably better than them too. Also, I'm thinking Beta isn't the best example for prominent alumni on new row seeing as how they're about half as old as the rest of the backed new row houses.

Why don't you read a bunch of the threads here instead of demanding to be fed info like a baby?

The poster above not only read the threads ... he wrote them.
An Old Row welp trying to praise Old Row and slam New Row.

As sophisticated backers of the UA Greek System, we are all aware of the impressive contributions of the Old Row houses and that we would be nowhere without them.

That said, the poster is a piece of sh%t who probably doesn't contribute a damn thing to his house.
And as to all the posts claiming Old Row alumni dominance, I'll gladly remind you that whether it's contribution to the Great State of Alabama (G Wallace, R. Shelby ) or the GREAT University of Alabama (J Coleman, J Doster), DX takes a back seat to no Fraternity.

We are thankful for what SAE & DKE have done for all of us and respect KA, EN, and Phi Gam, but we are damned proud of ourselves and bow to no one. Tell whoever is the sh&tstirrer on Old Row to have respect and to be worthy of his heritage.

Whatever...we'll give DX some credit for the past alums but probably in school those guys were geeks who couldn't get an Old Row bid. Let's talk about the present...DX is irrelevant. Pledge some solid guys and then let's talk.

a DX, but they along with maybe 4 or 5 other new row houses strongly compete with old row these days. DX is less irrelevant than ever these days, and top new row gets the best of the OOS talent.

We are aware that 90%++ of Old Row are stand up kids -- appreciate the kind words.

Agree also with "not even" that Old Row's in-state membership practices have helped New Row recruit a lot of great kids. Our OOS Brothers are great (mostly).

"Mystic", you are a douchebag, and I only hope that we get the pleasure of slapping you around before one of your own Brothers beats us to it. But hey, I look it like the OOS recruitment --- if Old Row didn't make some mistakes on nothings like you, we'd never have the chance to catch up!!

What things can help an OOS get a bid from an old row house. My friend on old row told me that its tough but not impossible? Thanks a lot

You should start a new post for your comment.

To get into Old Row you need to click with members and more importantly understand southern traditions.

Old row fraternities are no better than new row fraternities. Just that given a choice they almost always go old row.

The older the better, or least more bragging rights

Old Row membership is selective just like the machine and greek life in general.
- 6 member fraternities vs. the rest

Although this is not to say some new row groups are not better than old row ones. The new row group was just not picked or had not existed when the group was formed.

Most of the good new row houses are now older than most of the old row house were when the division was created, so don't think of it new row=new. Sigma Chi was founded in the 1870s at Bama, Pi Kapp was founded here in the 1910s, and Pike, OX, and DX were founded here in the 1920s. The only relatively new new row house that's particularly good is Beta who were founded in the 1960s.

Good point. Heck because fraternities like sigma chi is a old as it is it is one of the more respectable houses. That's all that my first sentence was saying.

was basically agreeing/adding to your point. The term new row is a bit decaptive because it doesn't really differentiate between a house founded in early 20th century and a house founded next year. The chapters of SX, OX, DX, Pi Kapp, and Pike at Bama, among others, are approaching or are in excess of a century old, have all initiated 2000 plus members, all have national and state senators and congressmen among their alumni (just like every old row house), and have all sorts of connected alumnae. Old row is kind of a good ol' boys club for people who are from Alabama and plan to stay when they graduate. Otherwise the difference isn't as big a deal. If you're from out of state or plan to leave the state when you graduate, you might as well not worry about old row vs. new row. All of old row and affiliated new row are prominent national fraternities.

The last 3 phi delt pledge classes have vaulted them back towards the top of the Greek life totem pole though and have made them very strong again.
