snap bids

can someone please explain snap bids and why they’re considered a bad thing? I know what cob is but what’s the difference between the two, also why does our chapter not tell us about these things

Snap bidding is an option for chapters that do not fill their quotas during bid-matching. Not making quota means the sorority misjudged and didn’t invite the right girls to pref or they didn’t pull the girls that attended pref.

Loose lips sink ships.

Snap bids are a great way to solve a couple of problems. Pan manages how many girls each house has to release. It's based on historic averages but that kind of stuff can change with numbers of legacies and numbers of girls from hometowns where a particular house recruits well. Sometimes that ends up with some house not inviting back enough girls to pref.

Let's say Sorority XYZ usually has about 50% accepting their party invitations. So at pref they can invite back twice the amount girls that Pan estimates for quota. This year XYZ seems to be competing against the two most popular houses (POP and AAA)and many of the girls XYZ wanted preffed POP or AAA first and XYZ second, leaving XYZ with some extra spaces in their class.

This is where snap bids come in. XYZ will receive a list of all the girls who were dropped completely or dropped out prior to pref. They look through the list and decide on say five girls that they'd love to have fill the spots in their new class. The girls are called and offered a snap bid. If the girls accept, they'll get their bids the next morning on bid day and no one will ever know.

Two problems solved: girl that otherwise wouldn't get a bid gets a bid, house that otherwise wouldn't make quota makes quota.

Snap bids is what KD and Kappa had to give out A LOT of because all of their top PNMS bolted for AXO, XO, DDD and AGD.

They cut too many girls in the first few rounds thinking they would have enough at pref that wanted them. But they didn’t.

It means KD and KKG ended up with a bunch of RANDOMS to get a full pledge class. They had to give bids to girls they’d already cut.

I was "snapped" 2 years ago to a house that is considered strong and at least middle.
I was released before pref/after sisterhood Honestly I think it's because I was a kind of grade risk (3.2) and oos, but who knows. VERY early on bid day, I got a call and an offer which I accepted! So then I went to bid day and ran home like everyone else! obviously I didn't talk about being snapped. Honestly I hung out in my room in pref day, kinda bummed out. The only people who KNEW were my rho chi/group, a few girls from my dorm and our recruitment chair.
But honestly Everyone is so into their own business and excitement, no one cares about yours. Literally the only person I think even remembers 2 years later is my roommate because she was reallly super sweet when I got released and we've stayed good friends. Never talked about it after bid day. It's not that I was embarrassed but, who cares I was just as much of my PC as anyone else.

As for COB.... All houses do it. ALL OF THEM! They may not advertise it or do it every semester. Usually these spots are reserved for friends of the house likes sophomores, girls they really wanted but had to cut for grade risk, sibling transfers and so on. Even the very best houses will have spots to fill after bid day. Depending on where they are at with chapter total and if there is someone they want or just need more members. Struggling/new houses are more likely to have open COB.

Thanks for the reply, @Ummm. I’m glad that you were snapped and that it worked out well for you! Snap bids are great for the PNM but also great for the house!

Don’t think that traditionally “top” houses like KD, KKG, DDD,etc. ever really do COB (haven’t while I’ve been here), but there is definitely a great opportunity to COB to a lot of great houses. Without a doubt it’s something that people should put feelers out about with their friends. It can be pretty under the radar if you aren’t looking for it.

Just to clarify, a house technically cannot COB if they are above total. So basically any chapter in the top 1/2 of membership is not allowed to add members outside of rush. It’s so that the houses under total can have a chance to increase. The houses with better retention haven’t COB’d in years bc they just aren’t allowed to.

Big fan of your snap story, though. Glad it worked out
