what i wish i knew during rush week.

First of all, rankings are dumb.

All of the houses are extremely involved, some (if not all) will require you to join certain things as I learned through my friendships in Tut my freshman year after bid day. Your involvement is really up to you. Many houses (again, if not all) will require you to be involved in at least one thing outside of your sorority and WILL check.

All of the houses have a social calendar. No matter where you end up on the row, you will have swaps and you will have date parties. (Heads up - I always thought fraternity date parties were way more fun anyway and didn’t really enjoy swaps even with old row or other popular fraternities. Freshman boys are wack.)

The only real area where the houses are different is GPA and that is up to you. You’ll have study hours, you’ll have personal time to study. You will have access to tutors and “test banks” to study from. Your GPA isn’t going to be based on your letters, but on the choices you make this year.

Every house has girls that prioritize studying, and girls that prioritize partying. There are girls in every house that prioritize their physical appearance and girls that prioritize philanthropy/involvement. You will find your friends no matter which house you end up in, and sometimes they won’t even be in your house!

I promise you over the course of this year you’ll learn that the people who care what letters you wear are not the people you want to spend time with. Sure you may have your sights set on a certain house and you may wonder how your year would’ve gone if you’d ended up there. But all that matters is that you are happy with the people you’ve chosen to surround yourself with, Greek or not. Old row, new row, or neither.

Your year is what you make of it, don’t let some letters determine your happiness. Take a deep breath and enjoy the rest of your rush. Remember on bid day that these are the girls that picked YOU to run to their lawn and wear their letters. Don’t worry about who didn’t.

I had my heart set on a certain house before rush. I loved them during the week. Every day they would tell me they couldn’t wait to see me the next round. Sisterhood round I met so many girls that said they had heard so much about me. One girl told me she wanted me to be her little! I didn’t have them preference round and considered stopping altogether but I knew I wanted to find my people! I got a house that I had liked during the week but didn’t hadn’t paid much attention to (especially Preference round because I was so upset) The girls from the first house told me to drop before initiation and re rush or COB the next year but I knew I wanted the freshman year greek experience so I stuck with the house that picked me and I found amazing girls that made the whole experience worth it. You will all be okay!!!!

Best post on greekrank so far. I had the exact same experience, and ended up in a sorority that was not on my radar screen all week, but was just a “filler.”
At the end of the week, it was clear it would be my only choice.
Many many times in the DECADES since then I have been so grateful that this was my path. My dearest, longest and closest friendships were formed in that sorority house and those friendships continue to this day. We have been one another’s bridesmaids, godmothers, handholders through divorces, deaths and health scares as well as joyful times with great trips, fun vacations, children and even grandchildren.
If you see a bunch of old ladies on game day in a tent on the quad laughing their heads off, it’s probably us!
THERE IS NO BAD SORORITY AT ALABAMA. All of the houses offer you friendship, a rich social life, academic help and a place to call home. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS WEEK!
