old row v new row?
by: hiWhat is the difference between Old Row sororities and New Row sororities ?

Old row are the traditionally most popular sororities from the past before there were so many Panhellenic rules for matching, maximizing, snaps, and quota additions. These things existed in some form but nothing like the process we use now. Old row were rumored to be the most sought after houses when UA was 80% in state and the majority of the rest of girls were Deep South from neighboring states. At that time before internet reputation and how houses were known back home was how you got your information. Legacies, connections, and recs ruled recruitment. This fueled division and competition to affirm that your hometown was just as good and relevant as the next. It was assigning worth through associations to your entire family and by extension your little area of the state. The houses were smaller and the sisterhood was much smaller. A lot of things that people call tradition now are simply throwbacks to a time when information was scarce. Sites like this, hometown chatter, and tent talk continue to perpetuate these old rankings and old row does have higher returns and can get many of their targets. That in no way means that the 1,900+ girls they did not take are not as awesome. Many of the targets are not based on any merit or a girl being above average in any way but on hometown address or how known you are to a house. Old row I still taking smart, beautiful, social girls but so Is new row.
Our world does not look anything like the 1970s or 80s or even the 90s and UA has changed so much. We are now heading towards 70% out of state and technology has changed the game. There are still top instate girls but they are joined by many more top out of state girls. Simple demographics not judgements. Add in all the Panhellenic rules and the houses are ALL filled with top PNM and actives. The idea that many thousands of sisters in the bottom half of houses are less - less beautiful, less motivated, less smart, less kind, less genuine, less desired, less social, less involved- is not just ignorant but proven false. Walk the row and our accomplishments, poise, intelligence, and appearance are indistinguishable. It makes no sense for us to keep perpetuating this throwback. It brings us all down, divides us, takes our power away, and makes us look like backwards hicks that can't recognize the world has changed. We play into the stereotypes of ignorant Alabama every time someone tries to push this tired narrative. The girls in every house right now know this is 1,000% true and it is only those living in the past or are so insecure that some outdated title matters that will deny.

Actually Sororities are not Old Row or New Row, only fraternities are Old Row and New Row.
Just some sororities have been invited to participate in an Old Row Fraternity party every year and get referred to as Old Row Sororities.
Sororities actually use to have circle designations based on cul-de-sacs there original houses were located.

The pretended superiority of "old row", along with the ugliness of "the machine", detract from the beauty of the UA campus, and the atmosphere of southern hospitality that attracts everyone here. I love Bama, but am repelled by the exclusionary, repressive nature of the Greek system.

What is sad is that the true leaders of the machine will always be the frats. Stupidly almost all sororitys jumped at the chance to join the Machine when invited and now there is the threat of social ostracism that keeps the sororitys in line and gives the good ol' boys power they do not not deserve.
All sororitys should leave the machine in block!
