what if you get cut???

by:

I'm getting scared. I'm OOS and I'm afraid I'll get cut by all the top houses because I don't have connections. At that point, I don't know if I should drop out of recruitment or what. How bad is it to be in a lower tier house? Do you still have any fun? It's pretty expensive to be in a house if it's just going to be an embarrassment.

It’s not embarrassing to be in any house other than SDT and ADX and they don’t even participate in formal rush. You will have a body no matter what house you end up in as long as you give it a fair shot!

Relax. It is normal to be nervous. You are heading out on a huge change away from home and there will be many doubts. Don't let recruitment be one of them! Have fun. Enjoy the process of meeting tons of new students just like yourself. There are no embarrassing houses on the row. Don't fall into the trap set by old alums who sit at home and need to feel important and involved. The row of 2019 is filled with strong sisterhoods with every type of student. All majors, all interests are in every one of our houses. You will meet beautiful and confident and accomplished sisters in every one of our houses. If you have awkward conversations (and there will be some) they are likely a result of exhaustion on the part of our sisters. You need to remember that the actives are also nervous. We have a huge job and it is so hard when y'all are so beautiful, friendly and accomplished as well. We are also tired because we have so many more parties. You might catch us at a bad moment. Try not to judge our entire house on one poor connection. It works both ways.

Those that get cut are those that don't take the advice above. They can't relax and open their eyes to see the best in all of the houses. They go into houses already thinking that it is not a good fit and that comes through in their conversations. They can't relate with people because they are nervous and fearful to be placed in a lower house or to be discovered as a fraud. As a result they don't present well and fall through the cracks or drop out when they don't experience their dream recruitment. The dream recruitment is the one that ends with a bid to any of our houses. The nightmare is trying to make decisions based on old stereotypes from the long gone old south that are perpetuated by people who fear being left behind in the modern world. Be yourself. Try to connect with the girls in front of you in every house. Keep an open mind and realize that there are NO houses above or beneath you and NO houses that you will be embarrassed to be associated with once on campus. Don't go into a house looking for reasons you don't /won't fit, go in looking at all the reasons you CAN an DO fit! ALL of our houses are respected and foster deep bonds that will make Bama the greatest 4 years of your life!

Your attitude may be the tho g that would keep you from having fun. All houses at Alabama are great and truly offer the same experience. All this old row/new row stuff is really just perpetuated by old row sororities so they can continue to feel superior. All houses have full calendars of parties and events. All offer fabulous mansions, all offer a house of 300-400 girls. If you can’t find your people out of that group, maybe you ate the problem and not the house you ate deeming lower tier!
