rushing fraternity

by:

So, I'm about 13 hours from UA and I really wanted to rush. I know that for most fraternity's they have recruitment throughout the summer and spring but obviously couldn't make it to any of those parties or get togethers. Will I still have a chance to get a bid once I move in this week or is it normal for people to wait to rush once they move in? I feel like a lot of kids come from OOS so I don't get how it would really be possible beforehand.

You still have a chance to go through rush and get a bid, but you need to act on it now. Fraternity rush at UA requires you to be very proactive and confident, as you should personally contact the rush chairmen of fraternities to obtain information about their rush events. The best place to look for the rush chair's info is maybe on Alabama's IFC page and each fraternity chapter's website. Email and call/text the listed contacts.Sometimes it's easier to get in touch if you text too, so make sure you do BOTH. There are some major helicopter parents out there this year, especially parents of incoming freshmen from up north. All this will do is put someone at a serious disadvantage during rush. Southern men may love their mamas but they def accept responsibilities proudly. I'm nor saying you are like this, or that you have implied you are like this, but I have heard some creepy stories from guys this year about people's moms contact them about rush events and asking really personal/bizarre questions! They were mostly from up north, so maybe that is pretty standard with how fraternity rush is done up there. I just want to let you know, just in case someone gives you that poor advice, so you will know not to do it! But yes you can still rush, you need to contact rush chairs today and make sure you know all the important dates for fraternity rush

So are you saying that of the old row frats.... Phi Gam, Phi Delt and Sigma Nu's pledge classes are filled last? I had heard that most houses have very few...maybe 5 or 6...bids available once school starts.

You can still rush and the above advice is good. The six Old Row fraternities will be pretty much closed off though as they already handed out the majority of their bids this spring and summer.
Old Row includes DKE, SAE, Phi Gam, SN, Phi Delt and KA. These fraternities are very difficult to get into if you do not have connections and recommendations from their alumni. There are a decent number of OOS boys in these houses (and all houses at UA) however Old Row hardly lets in people from up north. And KA will definitely not give a bid to anyone from up north. With that said, this means they all had connections before they started college since they are all from the same region of the country. That is why you have heard of people being able to meet others and know which house they wanted to join before starting UA.
But I don't know you and your accomplishments or where you are from. For all I know you could be very accomplished and southern and an old row fraternity might give you a last bid.
There are many great fraternities at UA, both Old and New Row. New Row has some really strong houses. You don't necessarily have to be in an old row house to be in a good fraternity here. Since you are just now contacting people about rush you will more than likely end up in a New Row house, but you should contact all rush chairs of all interested fraternities. Don't be intimidated and don't wait. Welcome to Alabama and RTR

I mostly agree with what you said about old row but Phi Delt will probably be an option and maybe Phi Gam and Sigma Nu. Most all new rows will be an option, however, OX and EX might already be full. Start calling rush chairs NOW. If they have any bids left, they will meet with you when you get to town. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL FORMAL RUSH!

No, this is not necessarily case. All the Old Row houses are very strong and I'm sure wont have a problem filling up their PC, if they haven't already. No one knows who is full and who isn't as that information is not going to be disclosed. You have to be confident and contact every house regardless if you think they are full or not. Don't ask if they are full or not as technically bids to all houses are still available. You just have to reach out to them and not be intimidated, theres no reason to be. And yes, even if a house is supposedly full, they may have saved a few bids. Look at the response by "what? " that is one of the best answers on here. Good luck!!

Look at Pike, DX and EX

EX has been having a field day with self-promotion lately. Pretty average in almost all aspects except self-ranking. I'll give them a B+ there.

Do all of the houses on old row and new row participate in fall formal rush? And is it mostly OOS guys rushing?\n\n\n\n\n

Most of the top fraternities will be full well before formal rush begins.

I think all houses participate in formal rush even though Old Row fraternities have already given out most, if not all of , their bids. The exception to formal rush might be DKE, I am pretty sure they do not select any members from formal rush. I think there is a lot of confusion about OOS students rushing at UA. Many OOS students are in the strongest fraternities and sororities at UA. The only way OOS status will be viewed as a negative by some is if you are from outside of the south, and especially if you are from northern state. If you are from OOS, but from a southern state then you have nothing to worry about! If you are from up north some fraternities will not consider giving you a bid, but many still will. If you are from up north you can still find a great house. Old row houses rarely give bids to northerners, especially KA they will not have any pledges from up north. But as I said, you will find a good new row house, even if you are from up north. If you are from the south then you have nothing to worry about.
And no, formal rush is not only OOS students, many are from Alabama. Just be confident and be yourself! Welcome to Alabama!

What are considered southern states? All states the SEC represents or just states in the deep South?

An old thread, but with so many OOS kids coming to Bama (and many from Northern states), this could use some updated comments.

This is a thread from 2013. If you're coming Fall 2019, you need to contact the rush chairmen NOW!!! Don't wait. Most good fraternities fill their pledge class in Spring and Early Summer. Each one only takes 40-50 guys and they fill up fast. Go to alabamaifc.com and look at the rush brochure for some general information, OOS percentage, and a picture of their house. A nice house is no guarantee of good guys, but all good fraternities have a nice house. On the ua.edu site search for "greek grade reports"; that will give you the size of the fraternity and its pledge class size last semester, and their GPA ranking. Get busy, do your homework, fill out their online interest form, text them, phone them, arrange to go see them face-to-face ASAP! You've got to make the effort NOW.

if I am coming from a northern state what fraternities will judge me based on that when it comes to rushing, do they have a stigma only because I'm from a northern state or is it if I act like I'm from one?
