be honest...

by:

whether you were in a fraternity or sorority, graduated 10 years ago or still in college...what has changed about UA’s Greek life? Was it for the better or the worse? Are there certain things that seemed more important (whether that be during your rush/pledging, being a member, experiences etc) that Greek life now doesn’t pay attention to? I’m genuinely curious!

I graduated about 15 years ago and think it is hilarious to come here and see the influx of students from out West and the Northeast that come on this website and swear that the tiers have changed.

The tires were the same as when my mother was there in the 70s and are the same as when I was there in the 2000s and will still be the same when my children are there in the 2030s.

I have nephews and nieces and neighbors and coworkers that are all currently there or have recently graduated and they confirm that the tiers are still the same.

I agree, do you ever think there could be a reason for the tiers to dramatically change?

if you care about tiers than you are insecure , you should wanna be apart of a house for the people in it, not made up rankings

The rankings aren’t made up. They are what they are and there’s nothing a bunch of New Jersey and California kids can do to change that.

yeah there actually is a lot they can do to change the ranks when the university is now made up of 65% out of state students. old row was extremely popular for instate kids, and now they’re the minority. New Row dominates the social scene now.

I mean if we’re being honest, old row still takes all the best OOS girls. They know that’s what it takes to stay on top. It’s not like all OOS girls pledge new row.

Bumping this because it says all you need to know about this site. These ranks are controlled and overrun by moms, MomMoms, and aunties of old Bama. The UA before the vision of becoming a great national university. The school for deeply southern women to find their husbands and their junior league friends. This is not the school we are all attending now. We are at a school that attracts top athletes, artists, and scholars from all over the country. The OOS ACT and SAT scores rival all other large universities now. This wasn't the case a when this mom above attended. FACT.

The mom above thinks it is hilarious to see all of the OOS girls from outside of the deep south. If this fits you, these ranks mean nothing but the statement is telling about who these ranks are for. News check: it's not you! These are ranks for little Harper, Buffy, and Grayson who will be returning to their Alabama country club and need to be accepted by the old ladies there who still go around worrying about where their house ranked 20-30-50 years ago. If your high school sends dozens of girls to UA and your dream is stay in the deep south forever, you ALREADY KNOW the ranks that matter in YOUR town.

If you are from OOS trying to gather some information of relevance you are already irrelevant and a filler to these places. You are a person to pay dues and stay out of the way so Buffy can live in her mansion and have her leadership position to impress the folks back home all supported by your dues, your GPA, and your involvement around campus.

To these old ladies there is an incentive to pushing other houses down, creating false narratives, creating outright lies, and putting thousands of smart women they don't know in tiers. It keeps their life and their legacies relevant and keeps others in their place. It compounds their alumni dues in their houses. It tries to keep them relevant and involved in things that most of our moms left behind when they left their universities. These ladies are living in the past and these rankings are where they get their worth and validation.

To anyone who thinks current sisters are controlling this site and self ranking, read the response above again. It tells you who is here keeping all of this nonsense going. The actives are here trying to moderate and keep some balance so all yall PNMs don't lose your minds when you are placed in perceived #3 instead of #1 or gasp a #6-8 ranked house. We are here to remind you that amazing women are working and doing awesome things in in house #12 and lower "ranked".

To anyone who thinks the rankings have not changes as the entire student body of this university has changed over the last 10 years or so well bless your heart. Alabama is changing and for the better. If you are stuck in the tiers of 2002 or 1972, what does that say about you and about your ridiculous tiers? Every PNM should read this and realize that it is all BS. Great girls in ALL houses.

I think what this I said saying is that these ranking lists are created and perpetuated by a bunch of bored mamas who are trying to protect the reputation of the only interesting thing in their life and something that happened a long time age. Which is sad and pathetic but confirmed by the mamma troll in the first response. It is apparent that the makers of these lists and a huge percentage of posters haven't been on campus in a long time and or they are interested in these rankings it is for ridiculous reasons that only apply to a small subset of small minded girls. The current sisters who post here continuing these outdated lists are not much more informed than their moms and meemas. A worthy post that needs bumping.

Adding to what my pan-sisters wrote above, there is a definite disrespect on these boards for all of the far OOS girls and a feeling that they are not enough to land in their houses. Trying to spin some of these houses as better than others because they are mainly deep south girls OR is insulting to all of those sisters who saw something special here and choose to come to Alabama. I am surprised that an alum and mom above finds it hilarious that there are so many OOS girls who come down here and don't find their ranks and tiers to be worth anything. I find it funny that an alum can't see that those things that are valued by someone who hasn't been on campus in 15 years would know anything about us. If you are OOS take this post and realize that you will find others as beautiful and wonderful as you in all of our houses. Don't listen to tent talk or old lady smack talk. You are enough and you will be lucky to run home on bid day to any of our fabulous houses.

I find it hilarious that an alum out 15 years would come here and show her ignorance and smalll view. It explains so much about GR and the disconnect between what you read here and what you find on campus.

Of course the tiers have changed and faster than any of these old belles could ever imagine. The entire structure of rush has changed. Every house has physically changed and the student body has radically changed. A house that might have been aspirational or top in the 80's or 90's now looks no different than any other. 400 smart, social, beautiful women in all of our houses and you'll find your tribe. You would think all these old ladies would be happy that the school and sororities are thriving. Small minded. I wish I knew what house she was in.I would venture to guess she wouldn't have a chance in the houses that she turns her nose down at now. She wouldn't make the cut if she were going through in this environment now.

The houses are so big now that going Greek is basically just joining a country club. Back in my days, the Fraternities had no more than 70-80 actives tops. Much much harder to go through pledgeship...much harder. It also lasted from the end of August to well into January. Sometimes February. The weak minded didn't make it.

Good analogy to joining a country club. They all offer the same amenities and it is the people that you know or click with that makes you feel at home at one club over another. They are all great and will enhance your experience but you only get out of them what you put in.

@right & @@right I’m surprised to hear this, I would’ve always thought a typical “old row” sorority/fraternity would not feel that way. But I think that it is interesting that members are starting to see how their strict criteria for PNM is kinda hurting them. People especially in the South always want to “belong” to something special, private, and especially influential. I think there will still be sororities and fraternities keeping with their old ways of rushing/pledging for centuries to come. Alumni to this day still have their hands on Greek life and will continue their ‘legacy’
