by: Malcolm

I am from India will be attending university in America to get PhD. My parents want me to get full American university experience and this is #1 university site among American students so fraternities must be big thing. To get full American experience what fraternity should I join and what do I do to join?

Do you already have undergrad and master degrees, and are coming here just to work on your PhD, or are you coming here to get started on the bachelor and see it through to Ph.D? Not sure college chapters can pledge guys enrolled as graduate or other advanced degree students. It probably depends on the fraternity, but this would be a rule set by their nationals.

If you're coming here just as a PhD student, not sure you'd have time for a fraternity anyway. I hear that Thesis and Dissertation takes most of your waking hours and a lot of the ones you'd normally use for sleeping. Plus, you'd be a lot older than the 18 and 19-year-olds making up most of your pledge class. Just some things to think about. Anyway, info about fraternities and the rushing process is at the Alabama IFC website.

Joining a national sorority or fraternity (member of IFC) is only for undergraduates. If you see grad students involved with fraternities and sororities it is because they are alums and joined as undergrads. There may be local fraternities and sororities that I am unaware of that invite grad students. Honestly though, as a grad student you will probably be too busy! Greek like is a big commitment. Also, membership costs anywhere between $4,000-$10,000 (if not more) per school year so it is a big commitment regarding both time and money. There are a lot of international grad students here, so I'm sure you can find a good support system, and I'm sure they can offer advice on social activities.
Even though you are not coming as an undergrad I think it's really cool that you were at least interested in asking about Greek life at Alabama. I hope you enjoy your time here! Welcome to UA and Roll Tide
