hometown pressure
by: yallI feel like that if I don’t pledge one of four sororitys at Bama, everyone from my hometown will disappointed and think less of me, not to mention my family. There’s so much pressure compacted into 9 days I don’t know how to process it. I know there had to be many others in my same boat. How did you have the courage to pledge another sorority or to not be ashamed? Many people not from the south don’t understand how a lot of my life was determined and will be determined by Greek life.

Let your friends and relatives know now that you are going through recruitment with a completely open mind. While it's possible that you might pledge one of the four, it's equally or even more likely that you won't. It won't be so bad if they have time to get used to it and if they think you're looking out for yourself. It's far worse to feel like you let them down because you were cut by their favorites and you had to settle or drop out of recruitment. No matter what they say (you'll regret it, you won't be in the best alum group, Granny will be hurt, etc.) keep saying that you're keeping an open mind. Then you don't need to worry about being cut by the four. You just pick a house you like and say see, I told you I was going to do this. I love my new house. I promise, being greek in any house is better than dropping out in shame because you got cut by the four you wanted.

I went a house that wasn't considered my "hometown" house. it has helped me grow and change and meet all new people. don't go what u "need" to go. you will be stagnant and miserable. however, its not a shot to ur pride if u actually end up loving ur legacy house. all in all- I grew bc I surronded myself with people I didn't grow up with in hs. its nice having new people around me all the time but still have my high school friends (that all went the same two houses) to run back to if I need them

my hometown did not have a "house" that the it girls always go to, but there were a few where different groups would trend. i wanted to have some contact and social world around all of those girls and the frats that have people from my area, but I also wanted to branch out. so i ended up in a house that does not normally get a lot of girls from my area but definitely run in the same social circle around campus

I know what you're going through because I went with my gut and chose for myself. I just want to lift you up and tell you that it can be done and not cause any lasting effects. I did tell people in advance that I might not pick an expected house and that did help. Otherwise, just go for it. I am still friends with girls I knew in high school but now I have an additional set of very close friends that I wouldn't have had if I just went to year 13 of high school like some people did.
