crunching numbers

by:

Last year, with 2244 PNMS, the actual number of girls who got bids on bid day (EXCLUDING SK and COBs) was around 1860. Around 83% of girls got bids on bid day last year, much below the suggested percentage from Panhellenic solely because of the colonization of SK. Hopefully it goes back up this year, meaning that about 2100/2281 girls get bids on bid day. This would mean the average pledge class size will be around 124 girls!

Similar topic, anyone know what the heck happened in 2016 that 2800 girls wanted to rush? Two years before that we had 2200 and now we are officially at 2281 for this year. Just seems like a crazy bump.

I wonder if it was a year that Bama had to admit more students than usual. The number of admissions offers are based on a certain percentage of acceptances that they can usually rely on based on yearly statistics. More offers are given every year than the number of freshmen the school actually wants to admit because they know that a certain percentage will not accept here. But some years a school will get far more acceptances than usual and have to take a larger freshman class than they would like. Could this be it?

Looks like 20k were admitted for fall 2016 and 22k were admitted for fall 2018. The freshman class actually was larger in 2016 (7.5k vs 6.6k in 2018) so that could have something to do with it.

I'm a pnm - even though that many girls are registered - what's the percentage that actually show up for recruitment? My friend registered early on, but has decided on a different school, so I know there's at least one.

Last year about 60 girls signed up but did not actually rush. A few sign up to move in early, some just decide not to rush, and some decide not to go to UA like you said.

2018: 2244 signed up, 2183 showed up to parties on Day 1 - difference of 61, or a 2.7% now-show rate. 1957 received bids, which equals 226 not pledging, so 89.6% got bids. Many of those pledging Sigma Kappa a few weeks later had withdrawn from recruitment, but I don't have those numbers; however, that would raise the pledge rate to historic levels.

Most who don’t get bids drop on their own - typically because they don’t like the houses that remain.

It's really sad because girls who spend a lot of time of greek rank or get invested in tent talk think they know which houses they have to have to have a good greek experience. Nothing could be further from the truth. All our houses will give girls a wonder sorority experience and if they put the effort into it, they will have life long friends. No house has a monopoly on sweet girls, smart girls, active girls, sports girls, connected girls, etc. All houses have all kinds. So don't drop out. Choose from among the houses you have and go GREEK!

So true! Dropping out is the biggest mistake ever. My roommate dropped out because she was cut from her legacy house. She has been miserable but has hung out at my house a lot because she really wanted a sorority. I hope we are able to get her in somehow. We could have been in the same house if she'd just stayed in recruitment instead of dropping out.

Your numbers are a little off. Only 2183 showed up to IWT, and of those 1957 got bids. So that’s 90% even with SK colonizing. Average is like 92-93%.

1957 girls did NOT get bids. Much lower than that. Definitely in the 1800s. All you have to do is go on the fall grade report and add up the numbers... definitely didn’t take into account all of the COBs

The official number from Panhellenic that was reported WAS 1957. Easily proved by a google search. The fall grade report is taken at the end of the semester and will obviously not account for any girls who decide to drop, transfer, etc. The number on the grade report is totally irrelevant to the number of bids given.

Plenty of girls who received bids did not show up on bid day and didn’t take their bid for whatever reason. Just because 1957 got bids doesn’t mean they were all accepted. And yes, I know that you can no longer “accept” and “reject” bids but you know what i mean

How many girls who maximized their options, didnt get a bid?

These acceptance criteria aside, I think the answer to the above is likely less than ten
Girls total, or less than 1 percent.

With all respect to those few, the odds of not getting a bid if you are open to all your options is very small.

I was terrified during recruitmemt and was dropped by all houses. Had good grades and made Freshman Forum. After adjusted to Bama, relaxed and was later picked up in COB. Girls do get dropped by all.

If you go through prefs, maximize your options (by listing all houses in order of your preference), then you WILL Be on a list. This is called a bid list addition. You will be added to one list or the other. That is what release figures method is designed to do. Now, if you are dropped BEFORE prefs that is a different story. Hope this helps alleviate some of your nerves.
