perception versus reality

What sororities did you think you would like going into recruitment? And how did that differ from what houses you actually preferred once you met the girls? I'm looking for specifics because I think it is good to show PNM's why keeping an open mind is so important.

How much pressure did y'all get from high school friends to join a certain house?

By: in state

I’m from an instate town that is mainly an auburn feeder school but definitely has a good number of girls that go to bama. There’s definitely pressure if a lot of girls from your area are in a certain house, bc you don’t want to upset them (especially if they’re your friends).

Having older girls from your hometown can also be a turnoff though if you don’t get along, or girls in that house have a particular reputation, so it works both ways.

Very few girls from my high school or even grade school went the house I did. The ones that did went at other schools. I kind of preferred that because I liked high school, but not really many of the girls who were all going to bama with me. I love my chapter and actually am moving to the east coast after graduation for a graduate program and will be looking for places to live with my OOS sisters!!!

When i can through rush i was absolutely dying to be a KD. i’m southern our of state, and the town i came from all girls, no matter what school they went to, were KDs. Nobody went to Alabama though. But when I came through rush I realized I just didn’t fit in there. I had my heart set on them and it really upset me when they weren’t what I pictured, but my heart was still broken when they dropped me before pref. It wasn’t meant to be, though.
I ended up prefing tri delt, kappa, and zeta and i couldn’t be happier in my house now!!!!

Why? She told you her pref choices. Stop being intrusive.

Came from OOR, had no preconceived ideas coming in and had the same list at pref. - KKG, ZTA and DDD.

Love my house too. Got the house I ranked first after pref.

The one I thought I wanted before pref dropped in my ranking to third after pref. The one I got I did really like all week. My opinion of the one I ranked second changed every round!

Going into senior year and think it all worked out. Really can’t see myself anywhere but here I am. \n\n\n\n\n

I went to an instate high school where most of my older school friends had gone to about 3 houses. I didn't want those houses for that reason. I wanted separate college friends, not just a super squad of h s friends. That put me in a house with a lot of oos girls and one that my mom and her friends were pretty sure would be the end of the world. I loved it though and can highly recommend striking out on your own. Make sure you choose wisely after IWT. If you are from a certain area, houses you may like may drop you because they think you'll go to those houses that take the majority from your area.

Did you wind up dropping the ones that girls from your high school usually pledge or did they cut you? Just wondering how it works.

You couldn’t help yourself! DG ALWAYS gets referenced and always glowing remarks. I am a PNM and honestly I’ve been reading every post this summer and see clearly that DG must be filled with insecure girls. It’s the ONE house I do t think I’m going to like!

First of all, DG is far from top on campus. I’m pretty sure anyone in DG knows this. But that doesn’t mean it’s full of “insecure girls” and as a PNM you shouldn’t base your decision off of Greek rank anyway. Before rush, I thought I’d really like AXO and KD but after IWT’s my favorite was ADPI.

It is interesting to look back but I went into rush thinking that I would see these immediate differences between tiers and know where I would fall. I read here and was determined to give them a chance but I had ideas. Then I started to mix some of them up. "was this a mid tier? bottom? but I had a great time and the girls were beautiful, friendly, fun so it must be an upper level" By mid week I was all turned around and got confused. Maybe I wasn't a target and was unmatched but at some top tiers I felt out and at some others, one bottom row I felt great. I had trouble keeping the tiers straight and they weren't matching my experience in each house. I ended up in an OR respected and loved house but carried a bottom to pref and actually like many of their sisters. I actually had two consistently top 5 houses and the consistently bottom ranked house left at pref. The differences aren't that stark. If the moms and old alums stayed out of it and we were all honest I think we would realize that these days with 400+ all the houses are filled with awesome women and we could fit in them all.

I was an in-house legacy to a bottom house, and even though I knew great things about the house, I had heard of the bottom ranking and thought I was making a radical choice at pref. I've since learned from my friends who made the same choice, and from my experience as a member, that my choice was not radical at all and lots of PNMs choose this house. I love my house and found great friends who are killing it here. Some on GR say you will miss out socially if in a bottom house, but that is not true. There are so many opportunities to kick it up here, that I am personally challenged to put the party down and pick the books up. Fortunately for me, the house values academics and offers great study support. If I can find wonderful, amazing women in my bottom house and feel it is an honor to be with them, then I am pretty sure plenty of others will find happiness here, or, honestly, any other bottom house as well.
