Why do chapters place an emphasis on community service for when it should be a brotherhood?

service looks good, helps out the community, and makes it easier to justify your debauchery to yourself. What's wrong with that?

Can't believe someone even asked this. Being in a fraternity is always about brotherhood, no matter what you're doing, and sometimes what you're doing together is helping a good cause. All fraternities have organizations they support. If you've got an issue with that, forget Greek Life because you'll be expected to help out. If you think you can stand helping someone who doesn't have it so great, then rush, but don't ask this question when you're face-to-face with a brother. He might be proud of how he and his brothers raised money for little kids with cancer, and might see it as a real character flaw that you don't think it needs emphasis.
