rush

by:

REALISTICALLY I am terrified to go into rush. My grades are not very good & by that I mean 2.8/2.9 BUT I have rec letters (1-2 per house) & I’d say, realistically, im a 7.68 out of 10, in looks. I was super involved in highschool and my social media isn’t bad. Because of my involvement I was super drawn to greeklife. I’m honestly just so scared that I’m gonna go through with rush & get completely crushed when I don’t get a bid because of my grades. Is there even a point in rushing or should I wait until spring & see if any houses are doing open bidding or just wait until the following year?? I’m really kind of stressed about this.. I’m scared that if I don’t get a bid, me being upset about it will ruin my year

Wait a year. Get your grades up. Save your rec writers the hassle and use them next year when your GPA is over a 3.3.

Don’t rush. Houses will drop you for your gpa, no matter how beautiful you are. Also don’t get so down on yourself. I’m sure you’re a completely amazing girl who will do just fine her freshman not being in Greek life. 66% of the school is non Greek so you’ll be in good company! On other note, you probably won’t want to rush your sophomore year because if anything it’s more difficult to get rushed when you are older

Thank God for RFM this helps a lot no matter what you'll be placed. The challenge is getting invited and being able to stick around until Prefs. If you only have 1 house you ride with all week that is better than being cancelled. Believe me there were a few last year and the year before who got in w/less 3.0. Plus you will have to be more interesting than most girls rushing because you're in curve zone. Even if this was a troll maybe it will help a real PNM.

What’s RFM?

RFM = Release Figure Methodology. It uses how well sororities have done in past year’s recruitments to determine how many women they can invite back at each round. A sorority that everyone wants to be in will not be allowed to invite back as many PNMs as a sorority that is less popular with PNMs. Basically it’s to keep the top sororities from stringing you along if you don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting a bid.

Let me tell you my rush experience last year. 2.8 gpa, pretty and good social media, involved in high school, no recs, far oos, no connections, winged it. It is ALL ABOUT YOUR IMPRESSIONS. Trust me when I say this! I was petrified after IWTs that I would get that call from my rho chi saying I was dropped... come to find out I got asked back to 8/12 houses! (and two of those were old row!) I was left with 5 going into sisterhood which is close to a full card. I had more houses than girls with 3.8s and recs. Come pref voting, I was left with 2 houses I loved and 3 I hated. It broke my heart when I got back my bottom 2 houses for pref. I withdrew from rush. Point of the matter is, I got all the way through to pref and I could have gotten a bid on bid day if I wanted to! I ended up COBing a house that dropped me early in the week and I love it there now, but I am sad I missed out on running home. If you want to rush, do it. Its all about the impressions you make. If you’re a good conversationalist, you sound decently pretty, and you were involved, then you have a good shot at getting a house. I should probably note that other girls I know in my similar situation got back a much smaller number of houses than me after IWTs. Good luck!

@realistic - can you explain your low GPA? Do you have a learning disability? Are you on medication for ADHD, what is your ACT? Have you experienced an a huge life issue that contributed to your "perceived" poor performance.... if you can 'explain' your low GPA then you and your rec writers should do so in a letter.

Get top alums to help 'explain' your low GPA and accentuate your involvement in other areas. You need someone to vouch for you, your character and your potential.

Do your work up front with the houses through your rec writer and girls in the houses who can vouch for you. MAKE CONNECTIONS! Once rush starts - it's too late.

GPA isn't everything.... but if that's all someone sees on paper - you'll struggle through rush.

Do your 'homework', get really good rec writers, and make in house connections. Good Luck!!

I'd definitely go for it. There's no reason to wait until next year and miss all the fun with your age group. At worst you'll meet a lot of girls. Then if you get cut by all the houses you will know some girls who will invite you back for cob. I'd say to have an open mind and not drop out if you have houses left like @Well did. Reading GR will give you the impression that greek life is very tier driven. But seriously everyone interacts and there is no downside to any of Bama's sisterhoods.

I know people with lower gpas than that and still get a house. your options might be more limited but trust the process and you will be fine

I obviously wish it weren’t this way because it’s so superficial, but you need to be really attractive if you are going to rush with that GPA. If you’re a good looking girl you’ll probably be fine, just know your choices will be limited. If you’re not, honestly I would wait. I know you said 7.68/10 but only you know where you really stand, especially in a pool of UA PNMs.

A lot of “upper tier houses” have around a 3.2 minimum gpa and it doesn’t matter who you are they won’t take you. Of course all houses are good in their own way, but if your heart is set on an “old townhouse” then wait until sophomore year to rush. I don’t recommend spring rush at all bc very very few houses take girls in at that time. I know a lot of sophomores who waited to rush and were so happy they did but I also know a bunch of girls that had lower gpas that are super happy in their house.

Also check the UA Panhellenic page for all the houses gpa minimums.
