location does not matter

by: Nope

Where you are from does not matter when it comes to rushing. There are plenty of girls from outside of the deep south who receive old row bids due to their decent conversation skills and good looks. Stop peddling this idiotic idea that sororities cut based on zip code when that has nothing to do with whether or not a girl will be a good fit for a house.

None will eliminate you based on where you’re from, but some will be more interested in you if you’re from an area they like to pull from. I think it’s because their alumna networks know more about those girls and can give them stronger recommendations. But yes, every house has girls from CA, NY, TX, OH, etc. Even the houses this site tries to say only take southern girls have sisters from all over the country.

All sororities have very large memberships. Perhaps five years ago some could afford a narrow window to select from, but with majority of PNMs now OOS, no house can overlook fantastic OOS women. TBH, because UA publishes GPAs per house that can easily be compared, the grades you bring to a house are more important than where you are from. PNMs get your grades up.

This is mostly just an idea still held from when UA was mostly in state students. This used to be a hard and fast rule (for example, if you look back to when they published the bid lists, in 2009 alpha gam took fewer than 10 OOS and all of those from the south) but it’s not accurate anymore.

It’s always been about connections, but back then the pool of OOS girls was way smaller (aka easier to avoid) and PCs were also a lot smaller.

Agree that grades have similar importance to connections these days.

As a Rho Chi from last recruitment, I can straight up tell you that this narrative is not true. Girls from Alabama and surrounding southern states have a much easier rush than girls from far oos. I had so many girls in my group that were involved and had great grades and had very limited options, and I wish I could tell them just how much of rush is a geography game.

Were they lacking recs or maybe not the “look” that was desirable?
