Learn to have a conversation.

Learn small talk, to look people comfortably in the eyes, not say ‘ya know’ a million times a minute, don’t seem like your dying to look at your phone/watch/around the room, don’t say something stupid, and be polite and smile.

If you are easy to talk to, you are going to get a good bid, even without rec letters, connections, home town etc.

Know someone who got to pref at every house without a rec.
