talking to a fraternity at an event?

by:

guys this might sound weird but should I be formal or informal when I first meet a chapter.

Like should I be "Oh pleased to meet you sir", be reserved and pretend I'm talking to my parents or can I be like

"Hey what's up", make a joke, and talk to these guys like they're my high school friend.

Yeah I sound like an idiot but I don't want people think I'm weird.

Keep it somewhere in the middle of those two. A handshake is classy so offer or accept it, but say "Hey, good to meet you, Mike. I'm...(introduce yourself).

I know a guy who tried casual and went too far. He wanted in so much, he thought they'd see what a good fit he was if he was all chill and made himself at home. He'd smack guys on the back, plop down on the sofa and ask questions like, "so how long will my pledgeship be" and "when can I move into the house," wording it like he was already for sure in. It all backfired. Also, I think he used "frat" a lot. Good luck. Just be cool and friendly, but respectful.
