Looks like the Greek numbers from fall are lower than last 2 years. Do you think this site is impacting people joining? Why the decline?

It’s getting to a tipping point in terms of costs. Just too expensive.

This site does not help the health of Greek life. PNMs read crap on here and believe it. At other colleges with weaker Greek life, chapters are closing.

It’s practically $8,000 a year without living in the house. That is just stupid money now. By far the most expensive Greek community in the nation. Some houses don’t even let you go up the stairs and are incredibly hard to ever live n on top of that they have all these Greek points and hours and they bill you for that too. My parents came out here for parents weekend and could get past the first floor (an old row house) I can’t get up there either. This is an awful place that makes no sense if you end up in one of the houses where you are like a visitor.

There were 159 guys that paid for IFC rush this past fall '18 but either didn't get a bid or didn't accept one. I've talked to a couple of these guys and they all said they weren't happy with their options so didn't end up rushing. Might not have been this site specific, but definitely seemed to be people's attitudes, University vs Jefferson, friends, etc.

IFC fraternities lost out on $475K last semester alone. Over 4 years thats almost $4 million lost. Seems IFC and all fraternities need to step up and do a better job in helping these guys find their place in Greek life. It benefits all of us if they join.

Your first paragraph makes zero sense; "didn't end up rushing." If they registered and didn't get a bid or didn't accept one then they rushed. Not everyone finds their place, at least at first. This is nothing new; it has always been that way.

Definitely cost. Doubt this site has much to do with it.

What about the fact that some fraternities get their pledge classes over the summer and are 'full' by the time rush starts? That never used to happen; rush started when everyone came back for the start of school. Sure, some kids were on the houses' radars already, but no one got an actual bid until rush week. It's getting ridiculous. Some houses are starting so early they rush high school kids before they even graduate. Not exaggerating, I have known of a couple kids getting bids even before they were officially admitted here. No wonder a lot of guys don't want to rush when the deck is already stacked against them before they even get here.

i do not understand why fraternities are giving bids before the guys even graduate from high school. no other school in the country does that.

That’s always the way it’s worked at UA as far as I know. The guys used to hand out bids literally at high school graduation, it’s always been pretty informal. We didn’t have actual structured rush until a few years ago so I don’t know why they would have waited until the guys got to campus to give out bids. Seems like it’s improving to me

IFC just needs to tell them on their website that they need to start early and not wait for "formal rush". Many show up with no idea how the system works, find out the good ones are full, and are angry no one told them.

How are freshmen supposed to 'start early'??? It's hard for guys who aren't regional to come for events in the summer, even if they know about them. Most guys have to wait.

If you have no connections, if you don't make the effort early, like in March when the new rush chair is in place, make contact, get invited to an event, meet the rush chair and some members for lunch on a second visit, and get a bid, like in April or May, you'll probably miss out. They fill up fast because other people are making the effort. They've got a pledge class to fill, and they're going to take them as soon as they find them. They can't afford to wait for you to show up when school starts. Yeah it's work, and you may have to make a couple of trips, but it's worth it.

Do your homework. If you've got good grades and are coming on some kind of scholarship, study the Greek Grade Rank report and the IFC brochure on in-state vs OOS percentages, and target 3 to contact for a party invite or a meeting. Try to see all three on that visit, and then focus on whoever expresses interest in you.

It's sad but this is how the south works...especially in the fraternity system. They bid kids before the fall semester even start. It's mostly connections and money in the south.

Schedule an early Bama Bound visit. Make arrangements beforehand to meet with your targets, and use that visit. Start early.
IFC is machine controlled to benefit in-state old-row houses. They could care less about informing or helping OOS guys and OOS houses.

IFC needs to tell them that rush here is informal, and very competitive for good houses, and encourage them to make contact early and often. Their website emphasizes formal rush in the fall, which is a non-event. I doubt that very many hear the truth on greekrank. They're set up for disappointment.
