old row versus new row

by:

Old Row versus New Row - why extinguish between the two and why is this important? The way I see it is Old Row was established on campus first, thus the need to say, “I was here first and you will follow my lead”. The thing about Old Row is there are lifelong traditions that will never be broken as there are many people who have lived the life of Old Row, and Old Row alumni will continue to support their house and traditions. They will recruit those that will fit this bill of tradition. This is a university in the State of Alabama so, of course, Alabama students are important to this tradition versus someone who has no relationship to this university whatsoever.

Old Row wants to be perceived as a “status symbol” and this is important to Old Row. Old Row usually comes from old money and the life of status. They have the need to keep up with the Joneses. To be anything other than Old Row is a disgrace. So with that mentality, Old Row is inept to put New Row beneath them.

Just look at how many sororities have been on campus for years and years and they are still considered New Row? What’s up with that? Will they ever be considered “Old Row”? No, not as long as Old Row has anything to do with it. Then you have the newer sororities that have only been on campus a few years and they are considered “bottom tier” or completely worthless. Will they every move up in the ranks? No, not as long as Old Row has anything to do with it. It is simply holding on to and valuing tradition and there is nothing wrong with that. The problem, as I see it, is keeping the tradition is more important than the people themselves. Fraternity hazing and The Machine come to mind, neither which place emphasis on the value of people as individuals.

New Row, the leftovers according to Old Row, obviously encompasses everyone else in the Greek system. Old Row doesn’t have a choice but to accept New Row as part of the Greek system because, after all, they are part of the Greek system. However, Old Row will still draw a line in the sand when the need arises for whatever reason.

When I think of New Row I think of greater freedom. They have greater diversity among their members and are more accepting of new ideas versus caught up in tradition. Thus, the differences between individuals are valued.

The University continues to increase the student body size. They continue to recruit high caliber, high performing students, some which can only be found outside of the state of Alabama. They continue to want the best and the brightest and continue to put their mark on the college map. With that comes an increased interest in the Greek system. And, if the current Greek system cannot accommodate the current numbers then it is inevitable that new organizations will arrive on campus. Some of these new organizations are very strong nationally and have the means to start a new chapter and the stamina to make sure it succeeds. They, too, are competing in the recruitment process but probably for very different reasons than Old Row.

Some of these "old row" sororities are newer on campus than some of the new row sororities. For example, Kappa and Phi Mu are newer on campus that ADPi and Zeta are. Old row doesn't mean anything for sororities, just a title that freshman can use to act like they're superior to others.

Zeta, yes (1910). But technically, ADPi failed in 1909 on the Alabama campus and reopened in 1931, four years after Kappa established and the same year as Phi Mu.

This is purely an argument of semantics, though. All of these sororities are sufficiently old enough at this point that it really doesn't matter. Sororities today look absolutely nothing like they did back then.

If I'm not mistaken, Zeta doesn't identify as "Old Row" due to a clause in their national charter banning it.

I just hope you didn't get your degree in English, flower child.

Why are they still having this conversation?. Its like one side "OLD ROW" is still trying to argue that the earth is flat and everything revolves around earth (OLD ROW" ) and it is obvious to anyone that does not have their head in the sand that the world is round and the world revolves around the sun. These are the FACTS.
ALL THE TIER SORORITIES ARE ON NEW ROW
THE TOP OLD ROW SORORITIES WILL ONLY RANK IN THE MIDDLE TIER AT BEST
THE BEST LOOKING, WEALTHIEST, MOST SOFISTICATED, SMARTEST, MOST WELL TRAVELED, BEST DRESSED IN TODAYS FASHION ARE NEW ROW SORORITIES.
It is really sad, sad and pathetic that these old row sororities think they are elite when most intelligent, sofisticated, attractive, smart, well traveled women would be ASHAMED to say they had no choice but to become a member of a bottom tier OLD ROW sorority, shameful, shameful, shameful!

Old Row versus New Row - why extinguish between the two?

Perhaps it's time to focus on your school work rather than starting petty drama on the Internet... might I suggest switching your priorities to English class?

I'm from the midwest US and can say that Chi O, ADPi, Theta, and Pi Phi are generally top tier out here. DG is not big here more of a lower mid tier so whoever posted them being top here is wrong. KKG and ZTA don't have many chapters out here but are good wherever they are.

I am a recruiter of highly skilled professional talent for several large corporations

If you beleive that your sorority affiliation matters, bless your heart.

It may look good on a resume. But some doing the hiring may not be impressed and perhaps even put off by your affilaiation, particularly If you are going to make a big deal about it. That would be very poor form

I find that if the hiring manager had "been Greek" then any Greek affiliation may serve as a bond. Reality is, no one is going to look up your house rank and in the long odds they did, consider that house rank above grades, resume and your personal traits.

Occasionally, there is a fluke Greek shared affiliation. It may break a tie among similar candidates.

But please everyone, get over the importance of this.

Old row tends to be the top tier here just the way it is and has always been not to say that can't eventually change and a new row house can move to top but they tend to be middle at highest
