alpha phi recruiting process exposed

This is making the rounds on Michigan's GR page. It's about the Michigan chapter but it wouldn't surprise me if all APhi chapters have to recruit this way.

Some of the basic concepts she discussed happen in pretty much every chapter at Bama. Like the bump group locations is 100% true for most, if not all chapters. Everyone scores on a numerical scale, granted different topics but there's always an appearance component. The specifics like the 1-10 on trendiness probably happens at a couple chapters, but the appearance component for a lot of chapters is more "did she put effort into her appearance today/how does she present herself" not is she physically pretty.
However the "coffee date" interview/scoring to determine bump groups is honestly not that awful. At least they had a system in place vs the recruitment chair picking favorites which is what happens a lot of time.

TBH it doesn't really read as that shocking. But I don't know anything about Michigan greek system to know if their nationals were trying to keep them from slipping or what?
And I agree with what 'just mho" said about aphi that they seem like they'd pick the pretty girl every time, but maybe that's because they are still trying to build something here? Easy for some of us to say "oh my chapter values grades more" but that's honestly because we already have a reputation as a strong house and we can have a good balance. They are still really new around here so they prob have to calculate if smart studious can attract fun partiers or the other way around. I'll give them a couple more years and see if they are more well balanced before I make the judgment on that.

My house’s bump groups are just the recruitment chairs grouping friends together. The girls in charge of each hometown group are in charge of getting each area’s tops picked up by certain actives. The actives assigned are normally based on having something common though, and while of course we want cute girls, if she’s going to be a huge QR or is a grade risk, 90% of the time we won’t take her. Some girls are better at rushing PNMs than others, but again that’s up to the hometown leaders to assign them to tops. I’m in an Old Row house.

Let’s be real - sorority rush IS about selection and cuts and it can be both cruel and random - whatever the criteria.
Otherwise, just do a lottery and be done with it.
That being said, it’s a system that has brought great enjoyment, friendship, community, pride and philanthropy (and statistically better grades when compared to non Greek students) to many girls for generations.
Fight the anti-Greek movement.
Pan love.

Having been in my chapter for 4 years, I wish I understood why I was put in certain bump groups. I was even on the recruitment committee for my house and don't understand it. Some groups were very clear that even if they weren't "favorites," they were certainly all a specific type of girl (crunchy granola girls, hermes bracelet girls, etc) but what was I? If I were to base what my chapter thought of me off my bump groups, I'd say they either thought I was nice but shy or just totally random, which isn't how I view myself in my house at all. Who knows, maybe I was just a wrangler or placed specifically to bring something out in different sisters.
