fall recruitment for panhellenic

by: Mixed Race

I have been reading on here that Pi Phi, Kappa, and Alpha Chi are open to pledging some minority women next fall. I hadn't thought of going through recruitment because I didn't think I had a chance at a bid because I'm part white, part black, and part Cherokee. Do you all think it's worth going through? I definitely fit in with my white friends at school and have appropriate clothes, car, etc. (my dad's a surgeon and my mom's a lawyer.) What kind of chance do you think I have?

I think we're starting to be more progressive, though. On here if someone says the N word people jump on them. Also, our sororities are opening up to the possibility of African American and mixed race girls for next year. I think that's progress. I don't know about the guys. I guess they'll have to if the girls do.

If it happens America will have a much better view of you all. As an AA who attended a small private school, I know that cultural differences may result in some ignorance. However completely barring PNM's who are identical in class, intelligence, money, beauty and personality aside from the fact that they are black is insane. As far as mixers with fraternities go: they don't have to feel obligated to like or hang out with said new members. But Jesus act like gentleMAN!

I go out of state to another Southern university where African Americans are a part of every sorority. Not in any big numbers, of course, but one or two in every pc. You're right. It isn't a problem at all with the guys (they have AA members, too). Bama's racism isn't typical of the South. It's just another example of the overall poverty and ignorance of our citizens.

I heard this about Chi O. Is it true?

The problem is that everyone thinksv it's the right thing to do but no one wants to go first.

I heard several houses have already decided. I don't remember which ones, but I heard of several.

I agree. Someone said earlier that we couldn't decide in advance to pledge a non-white girl. That's true, too. We need to just be open to the girls that come through and if there is an outstanding girl, try to pledge her regardless of her skin.

Everybody should listen to this person. I outstanding AA girls come through -- pledge them. Don't just kick 'em to the curb because they're AA. But not if they wouldn't fit in.

I guess my question is how many non-white girls go through rush each year. accordingly, I assume no non-white girls are currently in the 16 sororities. Can someone answer that please. That would answer a lot of questions about past history and the bama Greek system. Also, what about fraternities.

Has bama even been given the chance to pledge AA girls or is this all just an assumption. And I'm not talking about that Gamma Phi Beta incident that happened decades ago because who said sororities were still afraid of the machine over an incident that happened a long time ago

The most African American women I've seen sign up for rush is 4.
No stats on fraternities - they rush and operate entirely differently.

If the machine decides to punish sororities that do this, it would. It's very big-brotherish. I don't think that they will, though. They seem to be okay with sororities pledging a few mixed-race girls.

Please give it a shot. Things have got to change in this backwoods school.
