OMG so from fall 2017 to spring 2018...

ALPHA PHI'S NUMBERS DECREASED BY 185!!!

And ADPi decreased by 92???? wtf that's so odd. NINETY TWO!

the only reason numbers would decrease is because of girls graduating in december, transferring/dropping out, dropping the sorority, or getting kicked out. the average change from fall to spring (average number of girls a sorority "loses" for whatever reason) is around 30-40.

We know why Alpha Phi's numbers decreased... but why did ADPi have such a sharp decline? sus!

I know we don't have a choice, but the houses are just too big at this point. How are you supposed to form a true sisterhood with 450 other women? Ugh. It's easy to see how houses get divided.

Just aother reason why it's really too hard to rank anymore. With that many members, you'll find awesome and horrible, top PNMs and fillers, in EVERY SINGLE HOUSE.

Also, not just in terms of sisterhood... But just managing a house of almost 500 girls is HARD. It's not fair that 20 year olds have to manage an organization of 400+ girls just because Panhellenic doesn't want to lower the bid match rate / quotas.

Now that we have such big houses it is important that we keep the numbers up to keep the dues reasonable. The houses will continue to lose upperclassmen as long as the dues are so high. I am thinking that we all overbuilt and having the manageable pledge classes with the smaller (but still stately) houses of the past was a better way to go. If our member numbers dropped by 100 - 150 our dues would all go up to compensate. Think about paying $6,000+ a semester before all the add ons. No way to turn this now or Greek will be only for the truly rich.

I can't imagine DZ opening that new house with those numbers or APhi keeping up with the bills if they don't pull in a large pledge class.

Dues wouldn’t really be much higher. When ddd, agd, dg, and adpi built their new houses six or so years ago, total was around 300/350. Dues were lower then. Most of what we pay for is food, and less girls=less food. Also many of the costs are dependent on how many members there are, like the amount per member that goes to nationals. My house shows us the breakdown of costs at the beginning of every year and a ton of it goes to stuff like this.

Paying off the house is different but most houses fundraised from alums or like mine had a ton of money saved up. And I assume most had help from nationals.

We struggle to find suitable places to have nice date parties. Many places are already booked or are super expensive for a meh place. I’m kinda tired of the Drish house tent and crappy steps/ gravel ruining my good heels.

The higher the numbers means less girls have dropped out. This is a great way to gauge which houses have the best sisterhoods.

Go Chi O, Kappa and Alpha Chi! Y’all should be proud!

you also need to take into account that greek life is different for instate girls... for oos girls, sorority life is a way to find a home away from home and get involved. for a lot of instate girls, sorority life is a status thing. some girls may not want to drop because their moms/grandmas who were also in that house would be upset. some girls may not want to drop because they feel like they'd lose all their friends. some girls may not want to drop because it gives them a chip on their shoulder.

not everything is so black and white so please don't perpetuate the idea that a bigger house means happier girls.

Actually that’s exactly what it means.

Actually no it's not. NR houses are more susceptible to girls dropping because they take a larger margin of OOS girls. As the persona above said, Greek life is more of status thing for instate girls than it is for OOS girls. Other things can cause girls to drop their sororities besides being unhappy... Girls transfer. Some girls solidify their friend group and don't need their sorority to be a common ground anymore. Some girls just simply can't justify paying dues anymore. Etc, etc, etc.

If a house has an awesome sisterhood, then girls are happy and aren’t looking to transfer schools or drop their sorority.

Both of those are indicators that the girls aren’t happy, which means their sisterhood needs improvement.

Honestly I think it has pretty minimal relation to sisterhood.
For in state girls, dropping not only impacts their life on campus, but will still be a factor when they move home. It also matters more to their family (many of whom are in house legacies) that they remain a part of the house.
Lots of OOS girls come to Alabama and realize that the school and the south are not a good fit or that they are too far from home. Many NR houses also have lower grades and girls who love the school and their house leave because they are terrible students.
For OOS girls who don’t need the status of their house when they graduate, girls who have all their friends and aren’t as invested in the house might drop to save a couple thousand extra bucks even when they’ve had a great time in the house

I really think PNMs have to see red flags with houses with big drops. A big number
change could mean poor sisterhood (house drama?) or potentially higher dues.
